JOSEPH R. MILLER
Joseph Ronald Miller, 70, died in Kansas City, MO on Saturday, July 27, 2013 after a year-long fight with lung cancer. Joe is survived by his wife of 47 years, Diane Carol, son James and his wife Ayumi, son Michael and his wife Josey, daughter Laura and her partner Joseph Sturgeon, grandchildren Naomi, Noah, Ali, Jacki, Jacob and Austin, and great-grandchild Wyatt.
Joe was born on August 24, 1942, in Pittsburgh, PA to Joseph Ronald Yakopin and Katherine (née Kanetzer). He grew up in Pittsburgh and resided in Kansas City after 1967. Joe served honorably in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, and was decorated with the Army Commendation Award and Purple Heart. He was a graduate of Baker University and went on to have careers in sales, law enforcement and corrections, and entrepreneurship. Joe was an active member of both the Abdallah Shrine of Kansas City, and the Kansas City and Baldwin City Rotary Clubs. He was also a past deputy Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. Joe was a dedicated Scouter, having served as Asst. Scoutmaster, Webelos Den Leader, and past unit commander of VFW.
A visitation will be 2-3 PM Friday, August 2nd at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 4737 N Cleveland Ave, Kansas City, MO ?where his Funeral Mass will begin at 3:00 PM. The final resting place of his remains will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to The Abdallah Shriners Temple, Knights of Columbus, Boy Scouts of America, and the Wounded Warrior Project.
