Kenneth L. Atkinson, 90 of DuBois, passed away on Thursday, November 22, 2012 at the Highland Oaks Personal Care Home in Shippenville, PA.
Born on March 24, 1922 in DuBois, PA, he was the son of Leonard and Mary Grace (Lampey) Atkinson.
Mr. Atkinson was a woodworker and a cabinet maker. He had been employed by DuBois Tool and Electric Supply, retiring in 1987 after 32 years of service.
A 1941 graduate of Sandy High School, Mr. Atkinson went on to serve in the United States Navy, serving in the South Pacific Theatre with Air Group 7 aboard the USS Hancock in VF 7. He attained the rank of AMM 1st Class and was awarded the Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific-two stars, American Campaign and the Philippine Liberation Medal-two stars.
Mr. Atkinson was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church, where he had served as a deacon and elder. In 1995 he was named the "Man of the Year" by Presbyterian Men.
He was a member of the Garfield Lodge #559, Post 17 of the American Legion and LORD (Loyal Order of Ruptured Ducks).
He enjoyed history and reading, and was an avid Pittsburgh Pirate Fan and Steeler Fan.
Mr. Atkinson is survived by several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Helen J. (Daugherty) Atkinson, whom he was wed to for 31 years and passed away on May 7, 1989, two brothers, Joseph and Frederick Atkinson.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, November 25, 2012 at 4:00 PM in the Mohney Yargar Funeral Chapel, Inc., 142 W. Long Avenue, DuBois, PA with Rev. John White officiating. Interment will be in the Beechwoods Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the funeral chapel on Sunday from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM.
