"Mac" MacKenzie, 86, of Houston, TX, passed away on Monday morning, May 24, 2010. He was born Louis Lee "Bill" MacKenzie on November 24, 1923 in Baltimore, MD. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1943 and served in the Gulf of Mexico during WWII, and retired in 1973 as Lt. Commander. As part of the V-12 program he received his BS from Southwestern Louisiana Institute and later received his Master Degree in Education from Louisiana State University. He started his career as a teacher and principal. However, in 1950 he joined Shell Oil Company and worked his way up from a roughneck to a Human Resource Manager in the downtown Houston office; retiring in 1986.
Mac, a self proclaimed Renaissance man, was an accomplished artist, a published poet and a delight to everyone who knew him.
Mac was preceded in death by his parents, Enoch L. MacKenzie and Anne E. Mulcahy, his brother John P. "Jack", sister Jeanne M. Smith, and his wife Jewel L. MacKenzie.
He is survived by his sister Ann E. "Betty" Branning; beloved friend, Kitty Inman; his six children, Michael (Teri) MacKenzie, Laura (Ray) Barrios, Deborah (Kenneth) Welshons, Stephen MacKenzie, Carol (Walter) Wright, and Jeanne (Chris) Vrakas. He is survived by 13 grandchildren, Kenneth Welshons, III, Jennifer Welshons, Penelope Gandy, MacKenzie Wright, MeLeah Wright, Sean MacKenzie, Ian MacKenzie, Ryan MacKenzie, Wayne MacKenzie, Tim MacKenzie, Lauren MacKenzie, Katherine Shadix and Nicholas Vrakas and 4 great grandsons, Weston Welshons, Jenson Welshons, Tyler Gandy and Clive Shadix.
His family would like to thank the devoted staff and loving caregivers of St. Dominic's Village where he resided for the past two years.
Friends are invited to visitation with the family from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm with a Rosary being recited at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, May 25, 2010 in the Warren chapel at St. Dominic Village, 2401 Holcombe Boulevard, Houston, TX 77021. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 10:00 am in the Warren Chapel at St. Dominic Village. Interment will be at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church Cemetery in Richard, Louisiana.
