Leo E. Cormier Sr., 86, of Acushnet, passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Hilda (Stephens) Cormier, married 60 years.
Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Donat and Laura Cormier, he was a life-long resident of the area.
Mr. Cormier was an US Army Veteran of WWII. He worked for Comm. Gas & Electric for 42 years retiring as a Foreman in 1989.
In his leisure time he enjoyed woodworking, gardening, reading, but most of all he was devoted to his family and grandchildren.
Survivors include: six daughters, Laura Rosa and her husband, Manuel of North Dartmouth, Janice Selley and her husband, Peter, Patricia Szyndlar and Christine Conway and her husband, Robert all of New Bedford, Elizabeth Cormier of Fairhaven, and Michelle Cordeiro of Acushnet; two sons, David Cormier of Acushnet and Leo E. Cormier Jr. and his wife Pamela of New Bedford; 19 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; his son-in-law, Joseph Almeida of Heath; a sister, Pauline Smith and several nieces and nephews.
He was also the father of the late Judith Almeida, grandfather of the late Jonathon Cormier and brother of the late Aurele Cormier, Florence Tetreault, Jeannette Burr and Bertha Gauthier.
Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 10 AM in St. Francis Xavier Parish, 125 Main St., Acushnet. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visiting hours, Friday 5-8 PM in the ROCK Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford.
