Leon L. Mercer, born July 12, 1925, in Rockport, Texas, to the late John G. and Mary McRae Roberts Mercer of Port Aransas, Texas, passed away on November 10, 2013, surrounded by his loving wife, Betty and his loved ones.
He was a great-grandson of Robert Ainsworth Mercer, the founding family of Port Aransas in 1852.
A proud veteran of World War II, with the 36th division, where he served in North Africa, Italy and France. He was a Purple Heart recipient after being wounded in France and hospitalized for 4 months in Italy. He returned to the United States in December 1946, and began his career in the oilfield as a roustabout for Republic Natural Gas Company and Mobil Oil, progressing over the years to production foreman, ending his career working for Jack Culberson Enterprises.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty Quinn Mercer, his "Betsy"; and those he considered his children and family including; Doris (David) Boyd and son, Brandon Kocian, Jerome (Tammy) Kotzur and their children, Keleigh, Katie, Kyle and Kurt Kotzur. Mr. Mercer is also survived by his brother-in-law, Tim Timidaiski; six nephews; one niece and numerous great nieces and great nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, loving Aunt Kate (Kickie) Mercer; sisters, Edna (Tiny) Timidaiski; Eva Rae (Winks) Westmoreland and his nephew, James Timidaiski.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 12, 2013, from 5-7 PM at Rosewood Funeral Chapels. The funeral service will be held at 10 AM on Wednesday, November 13, 2013, at St. Francis Episcopal Church with Father Stephen Carson officiating. Interment and full military honors will be held at 2 PM at the Royal Palm Cemetery in Port Aransas, Texas.
