Lonnie D Akers

August 5, 1939 - January 26, 2011
AKERS, Lonnie D., 71, passed away Wednesday, January 26, 2011, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. His Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 29, 2011, at 2 PM, at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Susan Beeson officiating, and Interment will follow in Alabama Heritage Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Alabama Heritage from 5-7 PM on Friday, January 28, 2011. Preceded in death by his parents, Gracie and Daniel Akers of Davy, West Virginia, Lonnie is survived by his wife of 50 years, Martha Thornton Akers of Montgomery; daughters, Vicki Herrin (Scott) of Montgomery, and Linda Blevins (Greg Fiechtner) of Germantown, Maryland; grandson, Brandon Herrin of Montgomery; sisters, Louise Vaughn (Frank) and Barbara Goins of Goshen, Indiana, and Betty Hawkins and Lori Spicher of Bluefield, West Virginia; brothers, Daniel Akers (Monica) of Bishop, Virginia, and Frankie Akers (Debra) of Gary, West Virginia. He served his country for 22 years in the U.S. Air Force, including assignments in Taiwan, Germany, and Turkey, and met Martha when they worked at Gunter Air Force Station in the late 1950's, married her in 1960, raised two daughters with her, and retired to Montgomery in 1980, where he earned a college degree and joined the U.S. Civil Service.
