Maria Alievitch (nee Sapountzis)- At age 90, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on Tuesday, April 24, 2012. Maria was born February 13, 1922 to Nikolaos and Kyriakoula Sapountzis in Dirrevmata, Evia (Greece), the oldest of 7 children. Maria immigrated to Kitchener, Ontario (Canada) in 1955 with her husband, Nazmis Alievitch.
Maria is survived by her daughter, Sophie Kula Pilavakis; granddaughters, Androulla, Maria and Elena Pilavakis and their father, George Pilavakis; 5 remaining siblings; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Maria was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and younger brother Kostantinos Sapoutzis.
Friends may call at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 621 King St. West, Kitchener, on Sunday, April 29th from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Trisagion will be held Sunday evening at 8 o'clock at the funeral home. Funeral Services will take place on Monday, April 30, 2012 at 10 o'clock at St. Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 527 Bridgeport Rd., Kitchener. Burial to follow at Woodland Cemetery.
Maria will be remembered in her life and death as an individual of great strength, pride and dignity.
