Marjorie Smith Milling, age 89, passed away peacefully at her home in Mobile on Wednesday, November 28, 2012. Margie was born on January 17, 1923, in Warren, Ohio, to Marie Bacon Smith and Russell E. Smith. She attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where she completed a two-year business curriculum. She met her husband, Bert William Milling, Sr., in January of 1942 while at Mary Washington, and they married in Albany, Georgia, on November 3, 1943, four hours after Bert's graduation from Army flight school.
A loving wife, wonderful mother and gracious giver of unconditional love, Margie will be dearly missed by her family. She practiced and excelled at the domestic arts that make a home a happy place. Margie was also courageous and determined. She defeated breast cancer over fifty years ago. Margie enjoyed knitting, cross-stitching and other needlework, and cultivating flowers and birds in her yard. She also enjoyed golf, her sewing circle friends, her Sunday school class and her garden club. She was a member of Springhill Baptist Church and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Her survivors include Bert, her husband of 69 years, and her children, Bert W. Milling, Jr. (Pris), of Battles Wharf, Stephen Russell Milling, Michael Philip Milling (Deborah), and Anne Marie Sims, of Mobile, and James Patrick Milling (Julie) of Hood River Valley, Oregon; her grandchildren, Brooks Pitman Milling, Sr. (Sydney), Jeremy Bacon Milling, Sr. (Myrtle), Maran M. Grace (Wade), Stephen Russell Milling, Jr. (Jennie), Shannon Milling, Rebecca Milling Sisson (Andrew), Winston Rowell Milling (Haley), Michael Philip Milling, Jr. (Cheryl), Christopher Wade Milling (Nadia), Marjorie Caitlin Sims, Joseph Zachary Sims, Ryan Stephen Beverly and Joshua Philip Beverly; and 15 great-grandchildren. Margie is also survived by her sister, Barbara Smith Miles (Harold), of Anderson, Indiana, and Bert's sister and her husband, Ellen and John Thomas "J.T." Arendall, Sr., of Mobile. She was predeceased by her brother Philip Russell Smith and his wife Shirley Smith, by Bert's brother Robert James Milling, Jr. and his wife Sofie Milling, and by her first grandchild, Bert W. "Trey" Milling, III.
Margie's family wishes to express its gratitude to her caregivers, particularly Demetrius McNish and his staff at Health Care Intervention and the nurses and staff of Odyssey Hospice.
