Marshall J. Barrett Sr., age 93, of 136A Arch Street, Keene and formerly of Starling Street, Keene, NH, passed away on October 30, 2011 at the Langdon Place of Keene.
He was born in Keene, NH on March 30, 1918, the son of the late Carl M. and Florence M. Barrett. A lifelong resident of Keene, he was a 1936 graduate of Keene High School and recently celebrated his 75th class reunion.
Mr. Barrett worked as a tool and die maker with the former A.E. Henkel Manufacturing Company from 1937 until 1951 and at the hot forge shop of the former New Hampshire Tool and Die Company on Pearl Street in Keene from 1951 until his retirement in 1983. He was plant manager for 28 years prior to his retirement.
In February of 1940, he married Beatrice Cryderman of Westmoreland, NH on her 19th birthday. They were married for 71 years and enjoyed many years of traveling together to 50 states and eight countries. Following Mr. Barrett's retirement, the couple spent 17 years living in central Florida and moved back to Keene in 1999 to be closer to family.
Mr. Barrett was a championship horseshoe pitcher and a talented softball pitcher. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing shuffle board, bocce, cribbage and bridge. He was a 60-year member of the IOOF Beaver Brook Lodge No. 36 and a past Grand Master of the State of New Hampshire. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior early in life and became very interested in missions.
Survivors include his loving wife of 71 years, Beatrice (Cryderman) Barrett of Keene; children Marshall J. Barrett, Jr. and his wife, Bonnie, of Georges Mills, NH and Linda B. Kaufman and her husband, Murray of Horseheads, NY; six grandchildren: Steve Davis, Scott Davis, Joanne Kaufman, Eric Kaufman, Christopher Barrett and Jonathan Barrett; three great-grandchildren: Sierra Davis, Shayla Davis and Savannah Clayton; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Sandra Davis Metivier in 2007, his brothers, Carl M. Barrett, Jr. and Thomas Barrett, and by his sisters, Ethel Perham and Barbara Van Tassel.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 26, 2011 at 2:00 PM in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge, 181 Marlboro Street, Keene. Family and friends are welcome. There are no public calling hours.
