Mary Evelyn Andrews, 91, passed away September 3rd, at her home. Born on October 25, 1919, she was proud to be a member of the Hammond family in El Dorado and she loved her land, where she was born and died.
Mary graduated from El Dorado Junior College. In 1942, she fell in love with and married L.D. Andrews, a Navy SeaBee in World War II, who preceded her in death in 1993.
Mary had a passion for poetry and literature, and her love of history took her to places around the world, albeit by armchair travels.
She was a lover of nature, woodlands and pastures, rivers and mountains, sunlight and birdsong, and the wind in the trees. She was at peace in her home and her yard.
She loved her family, to cook for them and simply be with them. She also enjoyed spending time alone, reading and writing, and being with her cats.
She left behind a loving and grateful family: Alice Andrews (of Boxley, in northwest Arkansas) and Katie Neill (who lives near San Francisco), a caring son-in-law, two grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. She joined her beloved husband; her mother Ruby Hammond Jackson and father George W. Jackson; three sisters, Margaret Lester, Jean Dyess, and Sarah Ruth Lester; and one brother, Clifford Jackson.
We all hold her in our hearts.
A graveside service will be held at Sycamore Grove Cemetery at 10:00 am on Friday, September 9th under the direction of Young's Funeral Directors with Dr. Daniel Loomis officiating.
Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 300 E. Main, El Dorado, AR 71730.
