She earned her R.N. degree in 1972 and spent 38 years practicing nursing in New York, California, and Florida. She resided in Jacksonville for the past 16 years.
Mary Ann started her career as an R.N. and worked in various capacities within the nursing field. She especially enjoyed working in the Intensive Care Unit as a young nurse. She became a Head Nurse and then moved up into several Nursing Supervisor positions. Later on in her career, Mary Ann worked as a visiting nurse in the home health area, a hospice nurse, and a patient care coordinator. Her career ended at Children's Medical Services when she finally had to retire in January. She had a very strong work ethic and always wanted things to be done the right way…
Mary Ann was of the Catholic faith. She was a Eucharistic Minister at Holy Family Catholic Church and previously at Prince of Peace Church. She truly loved the Lord Jesus and wanted to serve him well. She spent her life helping other people and giving of herself to her family and to others in need.
Mary Ann's greatest joys in life were her three children - Suzy, Mary, and Cathy, along with her three grandchildren – Kendall, Alex, and David. She loved cooking for others, taking care of the sick, watching movies, and was an avid reader. She also loved talking on the phone as anyone who knew her can attest to! She will be remembered for her kind, giving spirit and, most of all, for her never-ending devotion and love towards fulfilling the needs in other people's lives. She will be greatly missed and her love is permanently sown into the hearts of those whose paths she crossed.
She is survived by her three daughters – Suzanne Bacon, Mary Hunter, and Cathy Carrier, her two sons-in-law – David Carrier and Bill Hunter, and her three grandchildren – Kendall Carrier, Alex Carrier, and David Hunter. She is also survived by her brothers Patrick McCann of Oceanside, California, and Gary McCann of Buffalo (Lackawanna), New York, as well as by her sister-in-law Mary McCann, her nephews Andy, Brian, and Craig McCann, all of whom are also from Buffalo, and various nieces and nephews around the country.
A memorial mass will be held on Wednesday, May 11, at 5:00 pm at Prince of Peace Catholic Church followed by a catered reception in the church conference center. Prince of Peace is located at 6320 Bennett Road in Jacksonville.
