Mattie Lee Davis was born in Ozan, Arkansas on January 5, 1931 to her loving paents Grant and Constance Allen and she followed God's angel home on October 31, 2013. She was the 5th oldest child of ten.
Mattie grew up in Blevins, Jacob Jones and Hope, Arkansas. She attended Blevins Training School and was a member of the graduating class of 1948 at Henry Clay Yerger High School in Hope. In 1948 she married Dorsie Ray Davis and they relocated to San Diego, California in 1950 where they raised three children.
Mattie was a woman of many talents. She worked as a housekeeper in her early adulthood. She later worked in the construction industry with her husband, at the Broadway Department Store in Grossmont Center, Kindred Hospital in Normal Heights and then for the Davis Family YMCA in La Mesa. She also worked as an elder caregiver and companion in her later years. As you all know she was always "caring for" and "doing for" others.
She loved spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed gardening, decorating her house for the holiday, sewing and making furniture. Mattie was on the Mother's Board of the New Assurance Baptist Church and enjoyed attending the Sunday morning services, picnics, breakfasts and Anniversary dinners for Pastor Laster and his wife Linda.
Mattie leaves behind to cherish memories her daughter Etta McNeil and children Shannon, Patryce and Marqus; son Clarence Davis Sr., his longtime partner Karen Price and children Myesha, Katrina, Clarence Jr., Sekea, Cory and Ca'Ron; son Leroy Davis, his wife Gayline and children Amber, Krist'n and Torino; two sisters Berthenia Robinson of Los Angeles, CA, Mary White and husband John of Hope, Arkansas; seventeen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends; sisters-in-law Helen Bowie, Patsy Moore; and friends Rosie Wilburn and Laquita Robbins. Her father; mother; three brothers Grant, George and Tom Allen; and four sisters, Verna Simms, Valerie McFadden, Louise Green and Martha Ross preceded her in death.
At Mattie's Celebration of Life there was special recognition of proud family members by generation as follows:
Children: Pink Ribbons
Grandchildren: Purple Ribbons
Great-Grandchildren: White Ribbons
Great-Great-Grandchildren: Blue Ribbons
Sisters: Yellow Ribbons

Hi mom, it's me again, today is another day that I could really use your strength, my brother is in surgery and I'm worried about him, they say it's minor but anytime they have to operate it's not minor. I miss you more with each passing day, trying to be strong for my brother but having moments of weakness, so I'm reaching out to you for the strength that you always gave me. I've always tried to help and protect my brother, but this time things are way beyond my control. I know that he's doing the best that he can but I also know that he's weak from the loss of you and his love (Karen). Mom, we could really use your support and strength at this time, You taught us to always hope for the best and prepare for the worst, but this time I really need to have the best, I promise to do my part and a little more, to help my brother get passed this hurdle. I love you mom, and I love my brother, just like you taught me to,

Throughout my life you taught me to always do what was right, even if it didn't seem fair at the time, you said it would always be the best way to live my life, I'm trying to celebrate your birthday and honor you and your life by trying to always do what's right so I'm going to spend today counting my blessings. Not having you around for the holidays was hard but not being able to share your birthday with you is even harder, I miss you mom, I miss your laughter and your beautiful smile. My life will never be the same, but you taught me that life is always full of changes. Happy Birthday mom, and thanks for everything, especially for sharing your life with me and teaching me to appreciate my family, friends and all the friends that I have yet to make. I love you mom, Leroy

Aunt Mattie, So much lost time yet so many fond memories...I know that you are in a better place and I pray for our family during this time of need. I can truly say that you were just what I needed growing up and through adulthood mentoring me and being one of my biggest supports during my collegiate success; always helping me take 1 more step in life. I know that you are in a better place and I get sad at the thought of me wanting to always visit you there and to see where mom grew up. California will never be the same and some things Ill never get to experience now with you! I will continue to make you, grandma Martha Jean Ross and aunt Mary White proud. Love you and may you Rest in Love!...

As I sit here thinking of you and your wonderful smile. I know you are smiling down on all our family and holding us close. You were the glue that kept the California and Arkansas families together. We have shared so many great times together. My best memories are with you at your home from my early days to adulthood. Your home was always warm and inviting.I am going to miss your laughter and of course as my son says the best peanut butter sandwich ever. I thank you for helping me at my time of need and even though I can never repay you I know you understood. Miss you dearly Aunt Mattie. As I sit here and share our last cup of hot cocoa I know you are here with me. Best hot chocolate ever. In loving memory to the best Aunt ever. Mattie Allen Davis

Cousin Leroy, Clarence, Etta and family, may the Holy Spirit comfort you and give you strength in times like these. Aunt Mattie's humorous laughter and words of wisdom will be missed. Even though she is physically gone, her memories will last forever. Remember the good times and draw close and help one another. Watch how God reveals her character and glimpses of her life to you through the grandchildren and family members.
Love you all,
Sonji (Ross) Flemons
