VINTON –Mayo Joseph Dupre, 73, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2014 in his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Mayo, a lifelong Vinton resident, was a 1958 graduate of Vinton High School and served in the Marine Corp Reserves for eight years. He retired from Gulf Oil Plastics Division and also served as a patrolman with the Vinton Police Department for seven years. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW. His hobbies included oil and acrylic painting, bowling, golf, street rods, and working with youth. Mayo used his artistic talents to free hand paint the Vinton High football field for numerous years. In 2001 Mayo and his son, Dwayne, earned the Field of Excellence Award, placing 19th out of all high school and college fields in the nation.
Mayo was a very passionate about his faith and was an active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, serving as a CCD teacher helping with the confirmation class and he served on the St. Joseph Church Cajun Festival committee. He and his wife, Martha, were one of the 1st groups of Eucharistic Ministers. He was a member of Our Lady's Rosary Makers, making handmade rosaries to ship to the military and missions all over the world. Mayo was a 4th Degree Knight and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #6108 in Vinton. He served as a Past Grand Knight and was secretary/treasurer of the Columbian Club for 8 years. paint and design festival ads for St. Joseph's Cajun Festival. He also decorated the Nativity scene at St. Joseph's for 11 years and he designed and painted the murals in St. Joseph's "upper room".
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Martha Rene Smith Dupre; daughter-in-law, Betty Primeaux Dupre; two step-grandchildren, Carl Monceaux and Matilda Chester; step sister-in-law, Mildred Frederick, and great- grandchildren, Mason, Jacinda, Allison, Kent, Chris, Scott and Makala. He is preceded in death by his parents, Mayo J. Dupre, Sr. and Bertha Breaux Dupre; son, Dwayne Allen Dupre, and sister, Evelyn Dupre Myers.
A Mass of Christina Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m., Monday, May 12 in St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Vinton. The Rev. Susil Fernando will officiate. Interment will follow in Big Woods Cemetery. Visitation will be held 11 a.m. - 9 p.m., Sunday, May 11 in Hixson Funeral Home of Vinton with a Rosary at 6 p.m. and visitation will resume from 8 - 9:30 a.m. on Monday.
