Mike Sotomayor Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 6, 2012.

Mike A. Sotomayor, 94, passed away on August 2, 2012. He was born August 1, 1918 in Cananea, Sonora, Mexico to Jesus and Maclovia Sotomayor. Mike is survived by his beloved wife Mary of 64 years, daughter, Frances Vasquez, granddaughter, Teresa Herrera and many nieces and nephews. He was from a family of 4 bothers and 3 sisters.

Mike was a veteran of World War II and was a Surgical Technician during the India-Burma Campaign and gained his citizenship for service to his country.

Mike loved to garden and took great pride in growing a great variety of vegetables and fruit trees. He kept his yard in Phoenix, Arizona neat and trim. For many years he would go to cattle roundups with family members to Sonora Mexico because he loved being outdoors, horseback riding and camping.

He loved to travel with his family and traveled or cruised to parts of Alaska, Canada, Italy, Mexico, Central America. He also saw many parts of India, China, and Burma during the war.

For the last several years he and his wife lived with their daughter in Rio Rancho, New Mexico without giving up their residence in Heber, AZ where he was a member of the Sheriff's Posse and was at one time nominated for Man of the Year for his volunteer work to his community and his Church.

A rosary will be held at Melcher Mortuary in Mesa, Arizona on Wednesday, August 8, at 7 p.m. The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, August 9 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Mesa, Arizona, followed by interment at Mountain View Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Church of the Incarnation, 2309 Monterrey Road NE, Rio Rancho, NM, 87144.
