Nadene Hodgson, 86, a longtime resident of (Big Bend, then Burney), passed away Saturday, March 15, 2014 at Meyers Memorial Hospital. She died peacefully in her sleep.
She is survived by her children, Geri Utterback of Burney, CA; Mary Eller of Greenville, CA; Jesse Jones of Medford, OR.; and John Jones of Burney, CA; and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Nadene was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Hodgson; brother, Joe Colley of Redding, CA; and sister, Marylou Day of Burney, CA.
Nadene was born in 1928 in Torrance, CA; the eldest child of three. In her early years she experienced the Great Depression and World War II. As a young wife, she aided the war effort by working tirelessly as a "Rosie the Riveter".
Throughout the course of her life, Nadene's deep love of nature was expressed by gardening and art. She was a painter and enjoyed trying new crafts. She also loved to play games with family and dear friends.
Nadene cared deeply for her community. During the Fountain Fire of 1992, Nadene helped feed firefighters by cooking meals in Big Bend. In recent years she became very active in her church volunteering her time to run the Clothes Closet, and outreach program that helps clothe people in need.
Nadene's sweet disposition and generous spirit were a joy to family and friends and she will be deeply missed. Her legacy of love and kindness will live on in the memories of her loved ones.
The family wishes to thank the community for their kind thoughts and condolences. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Nadene's name to St. Jude's Children's Hospital. In honor of Nadene's wishes, no formal services are planned. Arrangements are under the direction of McDonald's Chapel in Burney.
