Nellie Martin Berry, age 91, formerly of Bassett, died Monday, March 10, 2014, at the Golden Living Center in Martinsville where she was a resident.
Born in Franklin County June 29, 1922, she was a daughter of the late John Henry Martin and Bettie Ann Tinsley Martin. Also preceding her in death was her husband, Melvin A. Berry, sisters, Odell M. Franklin, Alma M. Woods, Ardis Martin, Ocie M. Moore, Lula M. Knott, Stella M. Hairston, and brothers, William N. Martin and John Rollen Martin.
Nellie worked for many years at General Motors in Inkster, Michigan, and retired after 25 years as the owner of Nell's Variety Store there. She was an active member of the Inkster AME Church, where she was a member of the Senior Choir, was treasurer, a class leader, and worked in the kitchen.
Nellie is survived by one sister, Maxcine M. Stanley of Bassett, her Godson, Hue Manns of Stanleytown, and a host of nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 12 Noon on Thursday, March 13, 2014, at Collins Funeral Home in Bassett. The family will receive friends from 11:30 A.M. to Noon prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Martin Family Cemetery, Bassett.
