Mr. Richard Curtis Kirby, 83, of Columbia, SC, died on Friday, November 6, 2009. The graveside service will be held in Woodridge Memorial Park in Lexington at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 10, 2009. The family invites friends to call at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday prior to the graveside service at Woodridge Funeral Home.
Born March 26, 1926 in Spartanburg, SC, Richard was the son of the late Curtis Richard Kirby and Thelma Kirby Sigwald. He proudly served our country in the Navy and bravely fought in World War II. After his tour of duty, he was a police officer with the City of Columbia for 17 years. Mr. Kirby was one of the first motorcycle patrolmen with the police force. He eventually retired from Richland County Family Court. A lifelong Gamecock fan, Richard was also an avid golfer and frequently played with friends until his health declined. Mr. Kirby was a longtime member of Riverland Hills Baptist Church.
Richard Curtis Kirby leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 63 years, Charlotte T. Kirby; two daughters, Sandra K. and Henry Eldridge of Tega Cay, SC, and Pat K. and Chris Weiss of Chapin, SC; one son, Richard Alan Kirby of Beaufort, SC; one brother, Eddie Sigwald of Charleston, SC; six grandchildren, Kim and Matt Sprouse of Asheville, NC, Jenny and Raymond Overman of Ft. Mill, SC, Gayle and Don Champagne of New Iberia, LA, Laura Weiss of Chapin, SC, Christy Weiss of Chapin, SC, and Justin Kirby of Allendale, SC; and four great-grandchildren, Ian, Katherine, Zoe, and Charlotte.
Richard was predeceased by one sister, Connie Lodge.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who wish to make memorials direct them towards the Building Fund at Riverland Hills Baptist Church, 201 Lake Murray Blvd., Irmo, SC, 29063.
