Ralph Leroy Acker was born on August 10, 1912 in Omaha, Nebraska to parents Hiram Leroy and Minnie Marjorie (Knox) Acker. His family left Nebraska for Portland, Oregon in 1924. He graduated from Grant High School in Portland and continued education and training throughout his working life.
Ralph married Lael Evonne Turnbull on May 28, 1936 in Portland, Oregon. He held numerous jobs in the Portland area before working as an appraiser for the Lincoln County (Oregon) Assessor's Office. He retired from that job in 1976 and moved to Vancouver, Washington.
Ralph was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Vancouver, Washington. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Order of the Eastern Star, and Shriners. Through these organizations Ralph was able to be involved in volunteer work.
Throughout his life, Ralph enjoyed fishing, boating and golfing. He also did a lot of traveling and R.V.'ing with Lael. He was a superb gardener.
Ralph will be remembered for his warm and kind nature and as someone who was easy to get to know and befriend. The neighborhood kids called him "Grandpa".
He is predeceased by his loving wife of 72 years, Lael, who passed away in 2008; two brothers, Hampton and Wilbur; and sister, Kathleen. He is survived by his son, Douglas (wife Janet); daughter, Cheryl Curtis (husband Richard); 7 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Service and Visitation will take place on Monday, July 18, at 11:00 a.m., in Skyline Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home in Portland, Oregon
