Richard Eugene Gumpenberger "PawPaw" of Ozark, Alabama, passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at Flowers Hospital following a brief illness. He was 81.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 15, 2012, in the chapel at Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memory Gardens with full military honors and Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home directing. Visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday, June 14, from 6:00 until 8:00p.m. at Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home.
"PawPaw", known to many, served in the U.S. Army for 23 years as an instructor, retiring in 1974 as SFC (E-7) at Ft. Rucker, Al. He also fought in the Vietnam and Korean Wars earning many military honors and ribbons. After retiring from the Army, he went on to serve the government another 20 years with Civil Service working for the U.S. Army Headquarters at Ft. Rucker, Al., retiring again in 1994. He also continued donating to many of his charities to help children and veterans because of his love for both.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life and wife, Helen Gumpenberger; parents, Anthony and Edith Gumpenberger ;Three brothers , James, Edwin, and Orville (Butchie) Gumpenberger, all of Fowler, Ks.
He is survived by his daughter, Debra Raslevich; his sons, Charles Gumpenberger and Michael Gumpenberger (Wanda), all of Ozark,Al. "PawPaw" is also survived by four grandchildren, Felecia Ann Whittington, Dennis Edward (wife Toni) Raslevich, Jamison Lee Gumpenberger, Anthony Eugene Gumpenberger, all of Ozark, Al; eight great-grandchildren, Toby Lee Gumpenberger, Cody Richard Gumpenberger, Anthony Richard Whittington, Dennis Edward Raslevich III, Katarina Maree Raslevich, Stetson Lane Enfinger, Weston Dakota Enfinger, and Landon Slade Gumpenberger, all of Ozark, Al. Also surviving is his sister, Lorraine (Joe) Erikson, of Arizona; two brothers, Robert (Helga) and John (Sharon)Gumpenberger, of Kansas; and a host of nieces and nephews and many many friends.

It deeply saddens me to learn of your loss of your dad & granddad.Mr.Richard ( I fondly called him) was like a second dad to me.He was a very loving, kind man that treated everyone as family I should know cause I have been family with you all for over 40 yrs!! To My Second Family The Gumpenbergers:It deeply saddens me for the loss of Mr.Richard (fondly call him).I finally got around to visting him, which was LONG overdue & I'm so glad that I did.We talked of the old days.Our Families have so many similarities...Our Dads were in Army together & retired from Civil Service & the list goes on! I just wanted to let you ALL know that I Care,I LOVE YOU ALL & if anyONE of you need me, just to talk you know that I will.
