Richard M. Hannafin, 73, of South Orleans, passed away March 12, 2014.
Dick was born to the late Maurice Hannafin and Mary Cahill Hannafin, on March 3, 1941 in New York, NY. He graduated from Ridgewood High School in 1959, and Manhattan College in 1967. He married his wife Claire Schoeppler Hannafin in 1992.
Dick was a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, 1st Marine Brigade, India Battery 1/12 from 1963 to 1966. He served his Country in Viet Nam from 1964 to 1966, where he was assigned as a forward observer for a Force Recon unit.
Dick worked for over 40 years in the financial services industry as an officer for banking institutions including Chase Manhattan Bank and Citibank. He later established RMH Associates, Inc., a marketing and consulting firm based in New York, NY and Newport, RI.
As a child and teenager, Dick and his family spent summers in Orleans at their home on Skaket Beach where he enjoyed sailing and racing his Beetle Cat, The Sea Flirt, at the Orleans Yacht Club.
In 1994, Dick and Claire permanently settled on Cape Cod, making Orleans their home.
Upon retirement he earned his license as a US Merchant Marine Officer. Dick loved being on his boat, The Recon, taking out fishing charters, tuna fishing, and showing friends and family the beauty of Cape Cod waters. In his younger days, Dick raced Austin Healey's on New York tracks and recently spent several years building a Shelby Cobra 429 replica.
Dick is survived by his wife, Claire; his daughter and son in-law, Meghan and Damon Kovelsky, and his granddaughter, Renee Kovelsky; and his sister in-law Linda Schoeppler. He is also survived by many loving nieces, a nephew, and cousins. He is predeceased by his sister, Maura Ott.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Cape Cod VNA/Hospice, Wounded Warriors, or a charity of choice.
Visitation will be held on Sunday March 16, 2014 from 4-7 p.m. at Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans, MA. Graveside service and burial are private.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
