RICHARD POWELL

Richard L. Powell, 73, of Henderson, passed away Feb. 23, 2013, of ALS complications. He began life in Rochester, N.Y., graduated from Tucson High School in Arizona, and received a BA in political science. Dick served in the U.S. Army in Germany. He met the love of his life, Nancy, at MSU. They spent 45 years together. His career was spent in the hospitality industry. He viewed work as a place of growth, excellence, creativity and connection in service to the greater community. As a mentor and friend, his impact was great and his legacy will live on. He loved eating out, travel, theater and music. Dick is survived by his wife, Nancy; daughters, Michelle (Scott) Hanson and Dawn Powell (Tom Crenshaw); grandchildren, Mark, Jake, Chloe and Violet; and brother, Jerry (Marie) Powell. Memorial services will be at 4 p.m., Saturday, March 2, at Palm Mortuary-Eastern, 7600 S. Eastern Ave., Las Vegas. The family suggests memorials be made to ALS of Nevada, Muscular Dystrophy Association, or Paralyzed Veterans. All were invaluable in their support of Dick and his family. Arrangements under the direction of Palm Eastern Mortuary, Las Vegas, NV.

Nancy...I just received this sad news.
Mr Powell was so good to me for 13 years, at Lawry's Chicago....he hired me right off the street, without an interview, and he gave me the best job I have ever had....I met you a few times at the restaurant. I was the bartender.

Nancy Powell

I continue to receive cards in the mail, phone calls and e-mails with such a wonderful outpouring of testimonies of my dear husband. I feel blessed and so fortunate to be the one to spend the most time with him these past few years since he retired from Lawry's. His Mother was the one who always reminded me that I should not begrudge him the time he spent taking care of business/following his career. I did anyway, some of the time, though I have easily come to terms with those past struggles - after hearing, thus knowing how much he helped so-o many people through their trying/troubling times, in addition to the just for fun times. It seems boundless and remarkable to realize how deeply and intently he followed his heart and unknowingly, became a quiet unasuming evangelist. He was totally genuine, never asking or expecting anything in return for his time and wisdom. In the later years of our marriage, I realized he cared and shared with not only family and friends, but also with current and previous co-workers. I told him that I believed he was a different kind of evangelist - One at a time was his style. I believe Jesus would have chosen him as one of his followers/teachers and now He can really put Dick to work. Today I am more at peace with his passing, as I feel blessed to have known him best at his best!

Donn and I will remember Dick showing us great hospitality at the Lawrys in Chicago on the occasion of our 25th wedding anniversary. He was very gracious and welcoming. (Our kids were planning on paying for the dinner, but Dick comped it for us.) We were very happy and surprised.

Please accept our sincere sympathies on the loss of your husband and dad.

I met Mr. Powell in 1980, when his daughter, Michelle, and I were in 6th grade. We used to play news reporters at his restaurant, Lawry's in Chicago. He was always so loving and welcoming. Michelle and I are still friends today. Our family is praying for your families, and mourn this great loss with you all...

Cabo, Buenos Aires, Tuscany, Ely -- These are just a few of the places we journeyed to with Dick and Nancy. What memories we made together as we searched for the perfect cup of coffee and more importantly, the perfect gellato. Dick was a great friend and great family member. We will miss you big time. "Bye Darlin!"
