Uncasville – Robert J. Adams Sr., 80, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 20, 2010, surrounded by his loving family.
He was the son of the late Emery and Yvonne Adams and was born on April 20, 1930, in Hartford, CT.
Bob ("Red", as he was known in high school) was raised in Norwich, and attended Norwich Free Academy where he excelled in track and football. He graduated in 1948 and was recruited by the semi-pro football team, The Bull Dogs in Greenville, as a running back. Bob went on to be an oil delivery driver for Lehigh Oil Company and later became a Union Carpenter for Local 30, New London and Local 24, Hamden working on many large projects throughout Eastern Connecticut during his 48 years of employment.
Bob married his beloved wife, Joan E. (Cope) Adams in Hartford, CT on May 27, 1950 and is survived by his wife and five children: Anne Marie LaGram and her husband Dave of Oakdale, Mary Lou Brisson and her husband Roger of Pawcatuck, Barbara Jean Adams and her husband Glenn Bonday of Beaufort, North Carolina, Jo-Ann Chabotte of Uncasville and Robert J. Adams, Jr. of Taftville. He was a loving grandfather to seven grandchildren: Julie M. Soper of Putnam, William J. LaGram and his wife Lynn of Manchester, Steven M. LaGram and his wife Colleen of Oakdale, Charlie Ann Chabotte of Norwich, Robert J. Adams, III and Michael K. Adams of Lisbon and Leah Beth "LB" Regan of Pawcatuck. He was very fond of his great grandchildren Stephen and Jacoby LaGram of Oakdale and was looking forward to greeting a new great grandchild in November.
He is also survived by a brother, John Adams of New Britain as well as several nieces and nephews and was predeceased by a sister, Marie Collins.
A resident of Montville since 1955, Bob loved to garden and took great pride in his home and surroundings. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and dedicated follower of UCONN Huskies men's and women's basketball. Bob was involved in many sports organizations throughout the years including Silver Star AC baseball league of Norwich, Montville National Little League, Montville Babe Ruth and Montville Youth Football.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 26, 2010, at St. John's Church in Uncasville. The family will greet friends and relatives beginning at 10:00 a.m. outside the church. The Montville Funeral Home of Church and Allen is assisting the family with arrangements. Burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the administration and staff of the Norwichtown Rehabilitation Center for their exceptional care, attention to and treatment of Bob during his time there. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. John's Church, 22 Maple Avenue, Uncasville, CT 06382.
