Robert Alcock Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 13, 2014.

Robert W. "Bob" Alcock, a retired Marathon Oil Company executive, died May 11, 2014. He was 81.

Bob was a twenty year resident of Evergreen, Colorado. A proud graduate of Texas A&M University, he remained true to his alma mater and was never far from his "Fightin' Texas Aggie" ball cap. Bob is fondly remembered for his wit and wry humor, unflappable demeanor, and gentle heart.

Bob served in the United States Air Force as a flight officer after graduating from A&M. After his military service he held numerous positions in the oil industry, first with Amerada Hess in the U.S. and Virgin Islands. Most of his career was with Marathon Oil Company, where he managed engineering and operations at the Garyville, Louisiana refinery, and served as Division Manager of the Texas City, Texas and Robinson, Illinois refineries. He retired in 1994 from Marathon's corporate headquarters in Findlay, Ohio.

Bob is survived by his loving wife, Virginia Lowe; his twin brother, James Alcock (Carolyn) of Houma, Louisiana; his four children from his first marriage to the deceased Susan D. Alcock: Robert Alcock (Meredith) of San Diego, California; Susan Alcock (John Cherry) of Providence, Rhode Island; Mary Alcock (Ray Check) of New York, New York; and Richard Alcock (Liz) of Somerville, Massachusetts; and by three granddaughters, Margaret Alcock (Taylor), Maureen Plaumann (John), and Megan Alcock.

Additionally, Bob was a loving stepfather to Dawn Sagaser (Chip) of Evergreen, Colorado; Sharon Lowe of Evergreen, Colorado; Shannon Baker (Joe) of Denver, Colorado; and George Lowe (Amanda) of New Orleans, Louisiana; and man's best friend, Briggs.

A funeral mass will be said May 22nd at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 4291 Evergreen Parkway, Evergreen, Colorado 80439, with visitation at 10 a.m. His final resting place will be the Hope Mausoleum in New Orleans, Louisiana. Flowers are welcome at Christ the King Catholic Church, or a donation in Bob's honor may be made to Mt. Evans Home Health & Hospice, 3081 Bergen Peak Drive, Evergreen, CO 80439.

To Bob's friends and family. Please accept my sincere condolences. Bob was truly a special person in my life.

Bob moved me to Texas City where I reported to him for several years as Operations Manager. Bob and I lunched together most workdays and played golf together 5-6 days a week for those years. What was special was, out of the office the subject of work was never mentioned even on those days that virtually commanded otherwise. I must have 1,000 Alcock stories.

At a time, then and now where unfortunately race and status matters, Bob was truly special. Not a single time in all the many hours, discussions and interactions with and involving Bob did it ever matter whether you were a fellow professional, waitress, busboy, etc.,Bob treated you with respect and dignity. I recall Bob offering his special advice to restaurant workers, clerical staff, strangers, myself and others much like we were his own children. It must have been a premonition but just earlier this week I was laughing and telling someone prior to my learning of Bob's passing how I had a former boss (Bob) who would be very unhappy with my decision making and you would say even in a full staff meeting, 'Leo, I have a baby girl who could do better than that'. Of course as only Bob could do it became a term of endearment as Bob would never let it be known his 'baby girl' as I recall was or close to being a Rhodes Scholar.

I can recall like yesterday, laughign about our situation with while having Christmas dinner in a Texas City Jack in the Box after dealing with some sort of Refinery problem that commanded two single guys attention that day. At some point I even ended up with a long time girlfriend aided and abetted by Bob playing Cupid.

Finally, I frequently and vividly recall walking down a country club fairway with Bob and hearing him say, 'Leo, did we ever think while growing up, we would ever be so lucky. We are not that much smarter than anyone, we were just in the right spot in the line'.

I will never forget Bob, he became that important to me. As sad as I am about his passing, it has to be infinitely more so for those closer to him than I.

With Sympathy,
Leo Bonaparte
