Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 17, 2013.

Robert "Bob" E. Campbell, 92, of Rock Island, passed away, March 15, 2013 at Trinity Rock Island. (In the past few months he was living at Avonlea Cottage, Milan)

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at Hodgson Funeral Home. Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Posts 569 and 200 and VFW Post 1303. Memorials may be made to Gloria Dei Presbyterian Church.

Robert was born on March 2, 1921 in McLeansboro, Illinois, the son of Dave and Pearl (Reynolds) Campbell. He married Hilda Miller Smith on June 12, 1946. She preceded him in death on May 19, 2004.

Bob was a WWII Marine veteran serving from 1942 – 1946 in the Pacific. He continued serving as a Marine through 1954. He retired from the Arsenal in 1979 after 34 years as a Federal employment. At the Arsenal he was tool crib operator. He was a faithful member of Gloria Dei Presbyterian since 1957. A ten year old girl at the church said, "He was the nicest man she knew". He was a devoted husband and father.

Throughout his retirement years, Bob could be seen walking the neighborhood, and having lunch with his friends at Maid Rite in Milan.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and son David on December 14, 2004.

Rick & Jean Chellos

Ed, as we have called him many years to avoid family confusion, has "graduated" on to Glory. An event he has been patiently awaiting many years, has come. Praise be to God and our Savior, Jesus Christ! WDLM radio has lost a faithful listener and friend. We thank God for your life here on earth and for your service to your country. Now, Cousin "Ed" your reward is here. Bask in it's glory and we'll reunite again on that great welcoming shore on the other side. Hallelujah! Rick & Jean
