Robert "Bobby" Edward Goff made his final journey to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 19, 2013. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, coach and mentor to many friends and family. Bobby had the character of a champion and was a competitor till the end. He considered himself truly blessed to work with young people doing things he truly loved – coaching, teaching and helping any way he could.
He was born in Kenedy on June 29, 1926 to Percy R (Pots) Goff and Hattie Martin Goff. After graduating from Kenedy High School, known as "The Kenedy Flash" for his athletic ability, he attended Texas A&M on scholarship. He still holds the punting record since 1944 of 87 yards. During his freshman year he was drafted to the Army and served two years during WWII. Bobby returned home in 1946 and married his high school sweetheart, Billie Jean Pogue. They returned to Texas A&M where he continued his football career and education receiving a Bachelor's degree in science and agriculture and a Master's degree in Science and Education. Bobby's coaching career lasted 19 years, first in Yoakum High School 1950-56, where they won a state championship, then Goliad High School for two years and then Port Lavaca to Calhoun High School from 1958-69, in 1960 they played in the State Finals. He became an Assistant Principal at Calhoun High School from 1969-87 when he retired.
He is survived by one brother, Glyn Hubbard Goff of New Braunfels; three loving daughters, Dana Jean (Franklin) Machicek, Susan Jane (Randy) Frnka and Ginger Lee (David) Ferraez; three grandchildren, Tracy Miller, Macky Dare and Jeremy Hert; two great-grandchildren, Chloe Franco and Todd Dare. Also seven step-grandchildren, Clint Machicek, Alison (John) Sterling, Erin Banks, Brandon (Claire) Frnka and Kyle (Jena) Frnka, Josh (Paula) Ferraez and Bryan (Christine) Ferraez and 16 step-great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife of 60 years, Billie Jean; infant daughter; his brother, Martin Goff; sisters, Marilyn Thompson and Joyce Lyons.
Many people helped care for Dad in his final days. Special thanks to Hospice of South Texas, Dr. Tyson Meyer, Cindy Myers, Dr. Paul Bunnell, Dr. Leigh Ann Falcon, Linda Vallejo and Marcella Silgero.
He was a member of the Teachers Retirement System of Texas, Yoakum Masonic Lodge 662, VFW in Port Lavaca, First United Methodist Church and a Veteran of WWII.
Visitation will be held Monday, October 21, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Port Lavaca. Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Mark Porterfield officiating. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at the Kenedy Cemetery in Kenedy, TX.
Pallbearers are Macky Dare, Jeremy Hert, Rusty Hall, Richard Meyer, Clint Machicek, Bobby Hunt, Bill Shrader and Bob Bonar.
Honorary Pallbearers are Franklin Machicek, Randy Frnka, David Ferraez, Jimmy Pogue, Kent Pogue, Charlie Hall, Eddie Logan and all CHS Sandcrabs.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of South Texas or First United Methodist Church of Port Lavaca.
