ROBERT FRANCIS WHITMAN, SR. quietly entered eternal life on the 8th day of August, 2011 at the age of 86. He was the devoted husband of Miriam Benson Whitman for over sixty years and the beloved father of eight children: Robert, Jr. (Sharon), Judy, Michael, Gerry (Serena), Wayne (Diane), Ken "Murphy" Whitman, Joan Abadie (Keith) and Laura Waguespack (Chris – deceased). He was also the cherished grandfather of sixteen: Shannon, Jessica, Melissa, Lauren, Patrick, Leigh, Chris, Ashley, Greg, Katie, Robbie, Michele, Jaclyn, Matthew, Austin, and Jared and great-grandfather of nine. He was the son of the late Harold Whitman, Sr. and the late Clara Schott Whitman and the brother of five: Harold, Jr., Melvin, Marcel Whitman, Evelyn Wagner and Winnie Jacob.
At the age of 18, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Marines and proudly served his country during World War II in the Pacific at Guadalcanal, Guam, and Iwo Jima. That experience shaped his character and integrity for the rest of his life. At war's end, he entered Tulane University, participated on both football and baseball teams and served as captain of the baseball team his senior year. During his senior year, he also coached the freshman baseball team. He graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree in 1950, intent on a lifelong career in his true passion, football.
He lived his dream, first marrying his "girl" Miriam and moving to St. Francisville to teach and coach high school and then up to Perkinston Junior College, MS. After a year of each, he was called to coach at his beloved alma mater, Tulane, for nine years. Opting not to move his then-family of nine out of town, he again taught and coached at another level: East Jefferson High School. When the New Orleans Saints came to town, he worked for them part time until accepting a position as Pro Scout, eventually becoming Head Scout. Leaving the Saints in 1983, he had five job offers from the NFL and college teams, which he credited to his deep faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. After 15 years with the Saints, he took a scouting position with the Division-rival San Francisco 49ers, garnering three Super Bowl rings in four years and then retiring in 1994.
In his later years, he was a member and past president of the "Good Ole Metairie Boys" and helped his son coach girls' basketball and softball at De LaSalle High School. He was a lifelong member of St. Benilde Catholic Church, serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister for many years. He enjoyed spending most of his time with his family, as they were his greatest achievement.
Family and friends are invited to attend visitation from 9:30 a.m. until 12:00 Noon at ST. BENILDE CATHOLIC CHURCH. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at the church, 1901 Division St. in Metairie, LA on Thursday, August 11, 2011. Interment will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations are requested in Bob's name to East Jefferson High School, c/o Principal Jim Kytle, 400 Phlox Avenue, Metairie, LA 70001.

All the guestbook entries confirm what I thought about Bob Whitman who was my position coach at Tulane many football seasons ago. I was saddened to hear of his death but uplifted to read about his personal Faith and his true commitment to it.

Dear Ms. Miriam, Bobby, Judy, Mickey, Gerry, Wayne, Murphy, Joanie, and Laura,
I learned today of Mr. Bob's passing. He was one of the first Great Men that I observed in my journey-- an amazing family man and career man.
I must tell you that the Whitmans, not one of the Whitmans, but all of you, were probably my greatest influence in my early life outside of my mom, dad and brothers. Your faith was solid, your togetherness was solid, your habits and morals were solid, and your pursuit of excellence was exemplary. And Ms. Miriam was a magician, because she played music.

Aug. 17, 2011 Miriam and the entire Whitman family. I found out about Bob's passing today, having been out of town. I have manny memories of Bob. He was one of my Metairie High heroes when I was young. When I worked with him at E.J. he was honest, firm, and always enthusiastic. He will be missed by the many students, players, and co-workers he influenced. Besides that he was a Marine. Agood man's passing brings sadness, but also happiness. He's gone to a better place, but we have the pleasure of having known him. Please accept our condolences. Frank and Susan Dalferes Covington, La.

Aunt Mim & the Whitman Family,
I was so sorry to hear of the passing of Uncle Bob. He was truly a great man. In a world where it seems that everyone is looking out for themselves, he was a thoughful & selfless man. He always looked out for the other guy & his family. He was so good to my dad when he was coming to the end of his days here with us. I cannot thank him enough for his kindness. I know dad always thought of him as a special friend, and that they are together again. I will always cherish the memories of growing up with the Whitman's, the Benson's, the Garrity's & the Gandolfi's. Those were great days. Please know that my thoughts & prayers are with you all at this most sorrowful time. If there is anything that I can do please do not hestate to call on me. May God bless & sustain you all.

Coach Whitman was a fine coach and gentleman. At EJ, you could be 3rd. or 4th. string and Coach always let you know that you were important to the team.
I had the good fortune to see him many times at Manresa...I will always cherish my memories of this good man. I know that God has blessed him.

Bob and "Murph", and the entire Whitman family... We are sorry to hear about "the loss" of your father, but boy, heaven got "the win". We were unable to attend his funeral and mass, but wish to express our sympathy to each of you. Although, we did not know your father personally, it's obvious, not only did he touch all of your lives, he had an enormous impact on many. HEAVEN, just received its best SCOUT!

Bob and "Murph", and the entire Whitman Family...we are sorry to hear about "the loss" of your father here on earth. But, boy, it sounds like HEAVEN got "the win" with this one. We are sorry we were unable to make his funeral and mass. Although we did not know your father personally, we feel like we just read a "great scouting report" on "COACH". It is obvious, not only all of your lives, he touched, but how many other lives he touched and impacted. Heaven, just received its best SCOUT.

Miss CC . Thank You, Sir.
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

What a loss! Coach Whitman was such a great guy. I was a cheerleader at EJ from 62-64 and he was always involved in every aspect of his Warrior team. He even helped the cheerleaders set up bake sales to raise money to go to the playoffs!

To Miriam and family,
Unfortunately, I was out of town and did not know that Coach had passed away. I was truly blessed to have had Bob as a coach and a mentor.
He was truly an outstanding individual who touched thousands of lives. He enriched all of our lives as a coach, mentor, and friend.
Each Sunday, when I give thanks for all those who coached and helped me throughout my life, Bob is in that number.
Above all, he had faith in me and encouraged me, not only at Tulane, but in all my endeavors and goals.
Every day, I walk into my living room and see hanging on my wall a photograph Coach gave me years ago.
As an outstanding athlete, WW II veteran in the South Pacific, Tulane and Jefferson Parish football coach, and professional scout for the Saints, Bob was a true renaissance man. He is in heaven now, cheering for all of us left behind.
Please convey my respect and love for Coach to the entire family.

Sincere condolences to 'Coach' Whitman's wife and family. Echoing the sentiment of others, he was a great coach and a greater man. I had the good fortune to play for 'Coach' on the JV baseball team at EJ and would like to share with you a story that embodies 'Coach's' greatness, and had a stong impact on my life. I was a poor hitter and only made the team because of being a good fielder. 'Coach' usually had me bunting to have any chance of contributing. During a game late in the season with our arch rival, West Jefferson, and comfortably winning, 'Coach' allowed me to hit away and I was lucky enough to hit the ball up the middle. Their centerfielder misplayed the ball and it rolled between his legs to the fence. As I rounded third base 'Coach' put up his hands to stop me.
After retreating back to third base, I looked up to see the ball just being retrived into the infield. I pleaded with 'Coach' that I would have made it to home plate safely. He put his hand on my shoulder with a big smile on his face and told me he realized I would have made it home safely but that I hadn't been to third base all season and he just wanted me to visit with him for awhile. God bless you 'Coach'.

My deepest condolences go out to truly a remarkable family. Not only did your mom and dad raise good children into great adults but also helped other young men and women in their search for what life was really about. Your dad was an exceptional person to talk to as I grew up and the calm manner in which he dealt with every situation I presented helped me become a better young adult. He will be missed by all that knew him and I'm sure he will be giving great advise to all he meets above.

We have all so admired the Whitman family, in large part due to the accomplishments of MR. Whitman. But the greatest of his achievements in my mind was the family he raised. How special they are, how lucky we are to have had him in our community and lives.

As a decendant of the original Whitmans, I only remember a little bit, but I do remember my Mom (Lynn Miller Foil) always talking about "Bobby". I remember visiting Uncle Harold and Aunt Clara. From all the stories and reading all the kind words, I can tell this is one "cousin" I should have known better. It's a big family and I'm sure there is one big "Whitman" hug happening in heaven, including my grandmother, Florence Whitman. Take care of him Maw-maw.

I was lucky and honored to have had Coach Whitman as my Physical Education teacher at East Jefferson High in the mid-sixties. What a great man and terrific coach. My Junior year our team played in the title game and lost by a very small margen. The team's brilliant year was in great part, made possible by "The Coach." He was my all time favorite P.E. Coach ever. I don't remember him ever yelling or him getting mad. He always smiled and had a wonderful sense of humor. He really did have the ability to make P.E. fun even for a lazy chubby guy like me. I always tried harder to try to please Coach Whitman. He was easy to praise when he knew you were giving it your all. And after exercises, he always allowed us to play whatever game we chose. That made the game play section of P.E. so much more fun. I would always try harder and have more fun at P.E. with "The Coach." And we were always proud to have him as our football team coach too!
I always tried to keep up with the Coach's career after E.J. I was so happy to have him with the Saints and look what he helped to accomplish at San Fancisco! What a wonderful man. Gee, he just had to have been the very best husband and father. It must hurt so much to lose him, I know, I lost my Mom and Dad too. But I know that because he touched so many lives in such a positive way, that just has to help you with your extreme loss. I will pray for "The Coach," and also thank God for him lending us our beloved Coach for a few years. Thank You Lord, we do love and miss Coach Whitman. With love, Irwin E.J. class 1967

"Coach", I will always remember you and refer to you as Coach. You taught me more about being a man and a gentleman that anyone in my life.
