Ruby Ballard, 100, crossed the River of Life into her Heavenly Father's arms on April 17, 2011. Ruby died peacefully at The Oaks at Radford Hills Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Faith, 5701 Highway 277 South, with Reverend Norman Patton officiating and Roy Keith assisting. Interment will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at a visitation 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, April 18, 2011, at the funeral home.
Ruby was born July 27, 1910 in Shep, Taylor County, Texas to Glenn and Lillie Jackson. She grew up in Shep and attended school there. She married the love of her life, Eddie Ballard, in Abilene, Texas on October 14, 1930. At the time of Eddie's death on December 20, 2008, they had celebrated 78 years of marriage. Ruby started her career of school cafeteria management in Wingate, Texas where she and Eddie farmed until 1951, when they moved to Abilene. She was then employed by Abilene Independent School District as Cafeteria Manager. Ruby was manager of several schools including Bowie, Travis, and the new Reagan school from which she retired in 1972. She was a member of Fairmont Methodist Church, now Southwest Methodist Church, since the early 1950's.
Ruby was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She was a hard working person and took great pride in her home and all she did. Ruby played the piano and organ. She was an avid cook and always had homemade rolls, pastry, and other dishes for anyone visiting her kitchen to enjoy. Her recipes and pictures of her great rolls have been published in the Abilene Reporter-News. She was active in her church and United Methodist Women. Ruby enjoyed camping, fishing, and especially outdoor cooking when she and Eddie made travel trailer trips over Texas and several trips out-of-state. She especially loved spending time with her family and their many visitors to their home.
Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Lillie Jackson; her sisters, Ella Herron and husband, Bobby, Vida Talley and husband, Irvie; her brothers, Loy Jackson and wife, Edna, Milton Jackson and wife, Alma, and Hershel Jackson and wife, Avo; and her grandson, Ricky Ballard.
Survivors include her son, Don Ballard and wife, Elaine; her daughter, Jeannie Sneed and husband, Clarence; three grandchildren, Cindy Kay and husband, E.J., Triana Cook and husband, Bill, and Terrell Sneed and wife, Linda; great-grandchildren, Kellie Sklar, Chrissy Randall and husband, Brandon, Kasie Kidd and husband, Cody, Jennifer Thomas and husband, Justin, Whitney Campbell and husband, Jacob; Chris Sneed and wife, Sarah; her deceased grandson's wife, Helen; thirteen great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Letha White.
