Russell "Mike" Cavins, age 67 of Rhinelander, died Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at home surrounded by friends and family. He was born May 10, 1944 in Rockford, IL, the son of Daniel and Kathleen (Treleven) Cavins. He went to school at St Mary's Catholic School and attended Rhinelander High School. He was in the US Army from 1961-1970. Russell worked as an operations manager for a truck company until his retirement in 2002. He married Susan Retlich on August 31, 2002. He was a track coach for 11 years at St Pius in Appleton, founder and director of The Fox Valley Grade School track league. Served as volunteer for Family Support Program Director for the Wisconsin National Guard, served on St Augustine's vestry and as junior warden, a member of the mission task force, and event coordinator of the Veterans Memorial Program and the annual art festival. He enjoyed being with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, boating, and woodworking.
Russell is survived by his wife, Susan, his children; Patricia (Mike) Kies of Raymond, Michael (Marina) Cavins of Cudahy, Victoria Cavins of Sherwood, and Cathleen Cavins of Appleton; his siblings Terrance of Antigo, Helen of Kaukauna, Colleen Cavins, and Patrick (Chris) Cavins of Green Bay, five grandchildren Alexandra and Jacob Kies, Lauren and John Kresal, and Miya Cavins. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 2, 2011 at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church at 10:30 A.M. with Father Dean Einerson officiating. Inurnment will be at the St. Augustine Churchyard. Visitation will be from 9:30 A.M. until the time of service at the church. A memorial has been established in Russell's name and may be directed to the family.
