   Peoria, IL – Ruth H. Mayfield, 76, of Peoria, passed away Monday evening, Feb. 18, 2013 after a very short battle with cancer.

   She was born in 1936 in Rush County, Indiana to Rev. Russell F. and Mary (King) Hiatt.  They preceded her in death.  She married Frank Mayfield in 1959.  He survives.  Also surviving are 3 sons, John of Peoria, Dwight (and Margie) of Elk Grove Village, Ralph of Alton; 2 grandchildren, Libby and Alex; and her sister, Julia Hiatt of Concord, NC.

   She was a graduate of Purdue University and devoted her life to education.  She taught home economics in Indianapolis and San Diego.  After raising the children she was employed by the Peoria Public Schools, Project Screen for 23 years. 

  She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and the Wesley class there.  At FUMC she was a co-chair and then chairperson of “Christmas Tree Lane”, was a co-chair of “The Class Circle” of United Methodist Women, was a facilitator of the “Insight Connection Ministry” and member of the Fine Arts Committee.  She was a member of Peoria Women’s club and the Garden Club.

   She devoted her life to and is a Past President of the National Alliance on Mental Illness’ Tri-County Affiliate.  She taught the Family-to-Family class and was a support group facilitator.

   The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, and 10 to 11 a.m. Friday March 1 in the parlor at the First United Methodist Church in Peoria.  Memorial Services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 1 at the Church, with Rev. Bob Phillips officiating.  Wearing your silver ribbon pins would be greatly appreciated. 

  Schmidt-Haller Burial and Cremation Services in Peoria are in charge of arrangements. Cremation has been accorded.    

   Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, or Brighter Days Ahead, 513 NE Madison Ave, Peoria, 61602.
