Scott Wicklund Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 31, 2012.

Scott Wicklund passed away on
December 27, 2012 at the age of 46.
Scott was born in Kirkland, Washington
on May 6, 1966, the youngest of five
children of Francis and Mary Wicklund
of Kirkland.
Scott is survived by his brother, Don
Wicklund, and sister in law, Belinda
Wicklund, of Kirkland, WA, his sister,
Geralyn Bandur, and brother in law, Paul
Bandur, of San Ramon, CA, his sister,
Barbara Wicklund, of Redmond, WA, his
brother, Douglas Wicklund, and sister in law Sharon Wicklund,
and his nieces, Selena and Kathleen Wicklund all of Spring,
TX, and his loving partner, Sharla Lynn, of Twisp, WA.
Scott Wicklund was a resident of the Methow Valley for over
20 years working at the North Cascades Smokejumper Base,
and lived on the base for many summers. He spent winters
traveling, taking photographs, skiing and playing in the snow
between Mount Baker, Steven's Pass, Mission Ridge and
mostly the North Cascade Mountains. He enjoyed surfing and
traveled worldwide to places like Indonesia, Singapore, New
Zealand, Europe, and Thailand in pursuit of the joy he found
through his admirable adventures. Scott also was an avid reader
with an early interest in journalism. While adding photos to
a backcountry ski story submission he got a request for more
pictures and so a career in ski photography was born. Scott
had his photographic work and articles published in Ski
magazine, The Seattle Times, Northwest Skier, Washington
Winter and various other magazines. He also had advertising
contracts with Steven's Pass, Mission Ridge, as well as several
other ski resorts.
Scott is our brother, uncle, friend and real life hero. We have
always said that Scott never met a stranger; he only met more
friends. Everyone who ever met Scott was proud to know him
and be a part of his life. He treated everyone with kindness and
respect. Scott will be sorely missed every day; but his smile,
enthusiasm, inspiration and stories will live on with us forever.
We have always been so proud of Scott and that will never
change. Scott lived his life to the fullest and that is how he
would want us to remember him. We love you Scott!
We ask that in lieu of Flowers please make a donation to
the "Leavenworth Ski Hill Fund in Memory of Jim, Johnny
and Chris" (Scott's words). This is officially known as The
Ski Hill Memorial Project. * This is a Memorial Project that
Scott had made clear to us that it was very dear to his heart
http://skihillproject.org or to the National Smokejumper
Association which of course is also dear to Scott's heart.

To Scott's loved ones; I know what a powerful and positive influence this man had on those who worked and played with him. I grieve for your loss. Scott and I are rookie bros and though our paths crossed infrequently, when we would meet at NCSB I would be transported back to 1991 by his warm smile and infectious enthusiasm for life and people .

Scott came to the Methow Valley for a job on the Winthrop BD crew with a purpose to be seen and work with the jumpers so he could become a smokejumper. He lasted on my crew about 2 weeks. You see, NCSB offered him a job. When he told me his news he was jubilant, with that incredible smile no one could resist. I will remember these things about him....firefighter/smokejumper, photographer, and the most beautiful infectious smile. My thoughts are with his family, ski friends, & jumper "bros ". May we help one another keep smiling & living life full throttle for Scott.

I had the privilege of being involved with Scott's first fire job at Lake Wenatchee in 88. He amazed us all with his ability to leap and run through the slash with a drip torch in his hand and a smile on his face. He told me he wanted to jump the next year and I told him to go for it! I'll always remember Scotts smile and awesome attitude.. my sincere condolences to the Wickland family and close friends.

Scotty- with a genuine curiosity for life and a memorable knack for making the complicated seem so simple I remember stopping for lunch after skinning to the top of the ridge above Cedar Creek, you torched off a Sub-alpine so you could warm your hands. The glow from the tree that day was no match for the fire that you lit in the soul of each person you ever met, you will truly always be one of the "Good Ones". Just point your tips downhill and let go.

Scott, I know it sounds corny but you are pretty much the reason I wanted to be a smokejumper! When I was in high school in Seattle I saw the Evening Magazine special that would become the NCSB tour video and for the first time in my life I knew what I wanted to do. Parachuting into the forest to fight fires seemed mighty intense to a skinny 17 year old but you made it look fun to work hard, get dirty and laugh about it.
So after years of scraping line with the hotshots and trying to crank out at least 267 situps, it was a big surprise for me when I rookied at NCSB in 2008 and 10 years after seeing that video got to meet the man who made me want to be there! Every time I see or hear that tour video playing in the loft I laugh a little as it reminds me of my first introduction to smokejumping.
I am really happy that I was able to share that story with you, even though it made you feel old! It seems a rare thing in life to have the opportunity to work with and become friends with the person who inspired you to get where you are and I will never forget that. You said it right that "we feel lucky, each one of us, to have this job... and get to work with a lot of really great people." You were one of the best Scott, and it was a privilege to be able to work with you and call you my friend.

We traveled through New Zealand with my parents and your sis Gerri, and skied together on a rare occasion or two -- so I have always known of your happy adventurous side.
