Dr. Shashanka S. Mitra, 81, of DuBois, passed away Monday, October 14, 2013 at his home.
He was born on May 20, 1932, in Kolkata, India, the son of the late Rohinindra Lal Mitra and Surama Mitra. On August 13, 1963 he married Krishna (Basu) Mitra, she survives.
Dr. Mitra received his PhD in Mathematics from the University of Washington in 1956. Having taught at various renowned colleges throughout the west coast, he began teaching at Wilkes College in Wilkes Barre, PA in the late 1960's. In 1975, he began his tenure with Penn State University. After teaching in Reading,PA(Berks Campus) and Erie, PA (Behrend College), He moved to DuBois, PA in 1977 with his family to teach at the DuBois branch campus of Penn State. It was here that he would finish his illustrious teaching career in the late 1990's
Dr. Mitra was an avid bridge player, loved watching the Honeymooners and was fiercely devoted to his family. Dr. Mitra. He was member of several distinguished Mathematical Society organizations.
Dr. Shashanka S. Mitra is survived by his loving wife Krishna (Basu) Mitra, two sons: Ree Mitra of Clearfield, PA and Sumanta S. Mitra of Singapore; three grandchildren, Rupa, Roma and Shanti; two brothers: Rathindra L Mitra and Kesav Mitra of Kolkata India; two sisters: Kalyani Bose New Jersey and Sivanii of India and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 4:00pm on Friday October 18, 2013 at the Mohney Yargar Funeral Chapel, Inc. with Hindu Priest Jagdish Jyoti and Rev. John White officiating.
Friends will be received from 2:00pm until the hour of service on Friday at the funeral chapel.
