Shirley Mae Marston, 82, of Keene, died Friday afternoon, July 11, 2014 at Keene Center Genesis following a period of declining health.
She was born in Keene, NH on June 21, 1932, daughter of Alford E. and E. Marteile (Phillips) Marston.
Shirley attended Keene schools and graduated from Keene High School in 1950. She graduated from Elliot Community Hospital School of Nursing in 1953 as a registered nurse. She had the opportunity to attend Douglas College if she would work as the night nurse in the infirmary, which she did, graduating in 1961 with a BA degree. She took many courses at Keene State College and UNH eventually earning her MS degree.
After graduating from Douglas College, she returned to Keene and eventually became the Director of the School of Nursing. While there, she taught several courses that were student favorites including the History of Nursing and also on the Eye. She held the directorship position until the school was closed. After the closing of the school, she worked for several years at the Beech Hill Rehabilitation Center in Dublin, retiring in 1994.

Shirley was very active on committees for her high school class reunions and also on the KHS Alumni Fund, Inc.
She liked to do arts and crafts, entering her work in many craft shows. She also liked to do crossword puzzles. She had an extensive teddy bear collection, donating some of them to the Fire Department and Police Department for children who needed them.
Shirley loved animals and feeding and watching the birds.
She also liked to travel taking five trips to Europe, flying to Florida, Jamaica and Alaska and driving to Texas and California.
She liked to attend movies, plays and musicals with her best friend of 72 years.
Shirley had a great sense of humor, often being asked to tell or read a joke at the end of an alumni meeting.
She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Keene. She was President of the Hubbard Pro Christo Group at the time it stopped meeting. She also enjoyed attending the Supper Club.
She enjoyed decorating for all holidays. Her favorite one was Halloween.
She is survived by her sister, Beverly K. Marston of Keene, NH and many cousins.
Services for Shirley will be held on Wednesday, July 16, 2014, 1:30 PM at the United Church of Christ, 23 Central Square in Keene.
