Shirley Clara O’Malley, age 89, of Peoria, passed away Monday April 22, 2013 at 10:23 p.m. at Bel-Wood Nursing Home in Peoria.
She was born March 20, 1924 in Chicago to Roy and Anna (Misch) Dean. She married Eugene Hammer.
Survivors include one daughter, Cassandra (William) Blankenship of Mapleton, one son, Kevin (Marlene) Hammer of Salem, OR, and two grandchildren: Melissa (Adam) Borders of North Pekin and Cory Blankenship of Mapleton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Arlene Pesch and one brother, Marvin Dean.
Shirley first worked as a Housemother at Mooseheart during the 1970’s. She then was a Seamstress for Kauffman’s Dress Factory in Aurora, and then worked for the Peoria Public Library from 1995 till her retirement in 2000.
She was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Chapter 00, member of the North Shore Animal League, and was a very involed animal rights activist.
She was of the Lutheran faith and was a loving and caring mother and grandmother.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of Shirley’s life will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday April 27, 2013 at her daughter Cassandra’s house in Mapleton. Schmidt-Haller Burial and Cremation Services in Peoria is in charge of arrangements.
