Margaret Corinne "Silky" Ragsdale Crockett was born Feb. 12, 1920 in Smithville, Texas and died on October 30, 2013. She was preceded in death by parents, Charles and Jesse Thorn Ragsdale, brothers Charles, Thorne and Paul and husband, Harry Crockett.
A lifelong Smithville resident, Silky graduated from S.M.U. where she was a loyal member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Summers were enjoyed at Camp Waldemar, Hunt, TX. After SMU, she worked for Neiman-Marcus and briefly taught school in Galveston. Silky returned to Smithville and married Harry Crockett, a rancher, in the early 1950's. She joined her parents in managing Ragsdale Jewelry on Main Street for over 50 years. Silky was a loyal and active member of the First United Methodist Church and served on numerous state wide committees.
She served on the Board of Visitors at U. of TX. M.D. Anderson, Houston and the Friends of the Science Park in Smithville. She was President of The Ragsdale Foundation established by brother Paul, providing generous charitable funding to many worthy recipients. Silky was instrumental in the growth and endowment of The Smithville Public Library and very proud of its service to the community. Harry and Silky were lifetime members of The Longhorn Foundation and over the years funded numerous athletic scholarships at the University of Texas. Perkins School of Theology at S.M.U. has an endowed chair established in Silky's honor.
She greatly appreciated the care and attention provided to her by her caregivers and close friends. A private graveside service is planned at Oak Hill Cemetery in Smithville. Memorials may be made to MD Anderson Science Park, First Methodist Church, The Methodist Children's Home, Waco, TX., U.T. Women's Athletics or the charity of your choice.
