Retired USMC Col. Stephen Stewart Evans, Ph.D., 60, died unexpectedly Sunday, June 22, 2014, in Stafford County.
Dr. Evans received his Bachelor of Science in education on May 19, 1976, and his master's degree in art in December 1980, from West Chester State College. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy in January 1995 from Temple University, where he also taught history. Dr. Evans was an accomplished and published author of "Heroic Poetry of Dark-Age Britain" and "Lords of Battle." As a colonel in the USMC, he researched and compiled "Anthology and Selected Bibliography of U.S Marines and Irregular Warfare from 1898--2007," while working as field historian for the Marine Corps History Division. After his retirement from USMC, he became acquisitions editor for the History Division of the Marine Corps University Press.
Dr. Evans is survived by his wife, Kristin Evans; daughter Victoria Wilson--Richards, husband Tim and their children, Emilio and Elana; Denise Maddox, her husband, Michael, and their children, Ashleigh and her daughter, Presleigh, Michael, Austyn, Tanner and Cali Maddox, all of Stafford, and Nicole, her husband, Danny, and their children, Savanah and Sydney, all of Fredericksburg; his parents, Phillip and Mary Evans of Pennsylvania; twin brother Craig Evans, his wife, Dawn, and their children, Molly Hartman, her husband, Kenrick, and Sarah Evans; brother Doug Evans and his children, Ally and Stewart Evans; and brother Eric Evans.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 29, at Mullins and Thompson Funeral Service, Stafford. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 30, at the Quantico Marine Corps Base Chapel, with interment to follow on Tuesday at Washington Crossing National Cemetery in Newtown, Pa.
