Stephen Ollan Hamrick, 79 of Pensacola, FL died peacefully on Saturday, March 1, 2014, at Covenant Hospice. A native of North Carolina, he was born June 9, 1934 to the late Gordon Washburn Hamrick and Carrie McAllister Hamrick Durant. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother, Winfred Roy Hamrick.
Steve moved his family to Mobile in 1962, where he continued his education, graduating from Spring Hill College with a Degree in Sociology and Psychology. He became a Counselor with the Alabama State Vocational Rehabilitation Service and served as a Liaison Counselor with Goodwill Industries, where he was a joint counselor and later Personnel Director. He completed a two-year Executive Director Training Program with Goodwill Industries of America in Washington D.C. He then became Director of the Mobile Area Goodwill, and later retired as its President.
He was active in the downtown Rotary Club for many years, serving as Chairman of the Public Relations and Bulletin Committees, as well as Song Leader. Other active memberships include Public Relations Council of Mobile (Board Member), Public Relations Council of Alabama, Southeast Council of Executives Goodwill Industries of America, and Alabama Association of Rehabilitation Executives (Charter Member). He was listed in Who's Who in the South and the Southeast.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory a loving wife of 58 years, Carolyn Miller Hamrick, a devoted daughter, Deborah Hamrick Sims, two special grandsons, Brandon (Valerie) of Brandon, MS, Tyler (Amber) of Semmes, AL. Loving grandchildren include Courtney, Lacey, Parker, and Preston of Brandon, MS and Bradley and Landon Sims of Semmes, AL., and a brother, Dennis Hamrick of Valdese, N.C.
Funeral services will be held at Radney Funeral Home, 3155 Dauphin Street, Mobile, AL on Friday, March 7, 2014 at 2:00 PM, preceded by visitation beginning at 12 Noon. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Covenant Hospice, 10075 Hillview Rd., Pensacola, FL 32514. Burial will follow at Mobile Memorial Gardens, 6100 Three Notch Road, Mobile, AL.
