Steven Kenneth Ried passed away on December 7, 2012, after a year and a half long battle with lung cancer, surrounded by his family. He was born on September 12, 1951, to Lionel (Lyle) and Geraldine (Gerri) Guzzo Ried, in Tacoma, Washington. He grew up in Oak Harbor, Washington. Steve had two brothers, L. Douglas (Doug) Ried and Richard (Rick) Ried. In 1971, Steve enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he was sent to Texas. In 1972, he met the love of his life Alisa (Lisa) Kaatz, and within four months they were married. In June 1976, they were blessed with the birth of their son, Steven Jr., in Austin, Texas. In August 1977, they were blessed with the birth of their daughter, Angela, in Bittburg, Germany, where Steve was stationed. Following that he was stationed in Las Vegas, where he started his law enforcement career as a reserve police officer with the North Las Vegas Police Department. Steve then moved back to Austin, Texas, where he worked for the Rollingwood Police Department, Bastrop Police Department, and Elgin Police Department. Steve's last duty assignment was Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska. Steve loved to fish while in Alaska. He would go fishing every night after getting off work during the summer to catch his king salmon. There were many nights when Lisa would come home from work just to find a note on the kitchen table saying "Gone Fishing." Steve also loved to ski while in Alaska. During the winter you would find Steve and his family out cross-country skiing. Steve retired from the Air Force in Austin, Texas, after 20 years of service as a Master Sergeant. Steve could hardly wait to start his next career (and possibly the one he loved most) in law enforcement. Steve started working for the Burnet Police Department and then moved to Brackenridge Hospital Police. Next, Steve went to work for the Austin City Marshals office. Steve worked hard as President of the Public Safety and Emergency Management Association (representing the Airport, Parks, and Marshals offices). He was instrumental in their merger with the Austin Police Department. He was always willing to help those in need. Steve loved serving his country and the City of Austin. Throughout his travels (he and his wife went on many cruises) and careers he made many friends. He was an avid golfer. He loved playing golf with his father and son. Steve became a true Texan when he bought his ranch about 10 years ago. He was always willing to help those in need. Steve was a devoted husband and father. He loved watching his children grow, succeed in life, and then become parents themselves. He took pride in his grandchildren, teaching them right from wrong, and of course playing with them. Steve could always be heard using his favorite word "YEP."
Steve is survived by his loving wife Lisa; his son Steven Kenneth Ried, Jr., and his wife Lisa, and their children Sammantha, Brienna, and John; his daughter Angela Dawn Ried-Elizondo, and her husband Andrew, along with their children, Chase, Melissa, and Rachel; his parents, Lyle and Gerri Ried; his brother Doug Ried, and his wife Diane, and their children; his brother Rick Ried, and his wife April, and their children; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Steve will be missed by all those that knew him.
