LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Sylvia Attilli Basconi, 95, wife of Americo Basconi, died at her home on Sunday, Oct. 17, following a lengthy illness.
She was born in South Clinchfield, Va. on Oct. 3, 1915 to Nicola and Fidalma Attilli. She lived with her family in Thorn Hill, W. Va. when the area was known as "Little Italy," later moving to Matewan and Sophia, W. Va. She managed her family business, Sophia Meat Market, during World War II.
Together with her devoted husband Americo, she owned and operated Basconi's Hardware in Oceana, W. Va., from 1959 to 1979. In 1979 she retired to Beckley, W.Va. The couple moved to Lexington in 2003.
Mrs. Basconi enjoyed her family, cooking, gardening and watching the University of Kentucky Wildcats basketball team. She was a lifelong storyteller who loved to reminisce about life in the southern West Virginia coalfields.
She was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Beckley, W.Va.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Basconi was preceded in death by her brothers Jess and John Attilli, and her sisters Francesca Attilli Comerose Galati and Ceda Attilli Androvandi.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Americo, of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law: David and Sharon Basconi of Durham, Conn.; Edward and Mary Alice Basconi of Johnson City, Tenn.; Wayne and Pamela Basconi of Versailles, Ky.; seven grandchildren: David, Brian, Joseph, Regina and Rita Basconi, and Zachary and Michael Bray; one great-granddaughter, Ella Basconi; several nieces and nephews, and a loving caregiver, Florence Huff of Midway, Ky.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m.,Wednesday, October 20, 2010, at Rose & Quesenberry Funeral Home, 1901 S. Kanawha St., Beckley, W.Va. A rosary will follow. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, October 21, 2010, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 626 S. Oakwood Ave., with Father Samuel S. Sacus. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be family and friends.
