Virgil D. "Dutch" Thorn, 89 of Huntington passed away at 12:15 p.m. on Monday, February 18, 2013 at his residence. Dutch was a 1943 graduate of Huntington High School. He was a WWII U.S. Army veteran who served from 1943 - 1945. He had worked for 45 years at Dana Corporation. He was a member of Central Christian Church, American Legion Post 85, Huntington Elks Lodge, Huntington YMCA swim team and the unbeaten 1940 Huntington High School Football Team. He served as president of the Athletic Board at Dana for several years. He was an avid Chicago Bears, Chicago Cubs and IU fan. He enjoyed fishing and loved spending time with his family.
Dutch was born on February 1, 1924 in Huntington, a son of Bert and Pearl (Armfield) Thorn.
He was united in marriage to M. Louise Haverman on April 19, 1944 in Huntington. His wife survives.
Additional survivors include two sons: Pete (Marilyn) Thorn of Challis, Idaho; Sam (Ruby) Thorn of Fort Wayne; a daughter: Peg Smallwood of Huntington; ten grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother: Everett Eugene Thorn and two sisters: Dorthy Rachel Powell and Euanna Holloway.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 21, 2013 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, February 22, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel.
Memorials may be made out to Central Christian Church or to Family Hospice of Berne both in care of Myers Funeral Home, 2901 Guilford Street, Huntington, IN 46750.
Interment will take place at a later date at the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery.
