Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 23, 2015.

Wallace William "Wally" Schwahn, 92, of Rock Island; passed away Wednesday, July 22, 2015 in Rock Island. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 27, 2015 at 1:00 pm at the Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island. Visitation will be Monday from 11:30 am until the service, at the mortuary. Memorials may be made to any local hospice group or the American Cancer Society. Interment will follow at Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island.

Wally was born June 2, 1923 in Appleton, WI; the son of Edwin and Cora (Wegner) Schwahn. He was a veteran of WWII. Following his service to his nation, he attended and graduated from Valparaiso University in Indiana with a Bachelor of Sciences in Chemistry. He then attended and graduated from Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago.

Wally married Nancy Ann Jost on April 5, 1951 in Rock Island. She preceded him in death on June 25, 1980. He was employed by Hodgson Funeral Home in Rock Island, where he worked as a funeral director and embalmer from 1950 until his retirement in 1991. Following his retirement, he assisted the funeral home on a part-time basis for many years.

Wally was a long-time and devoted member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Island. He was also a member of the Greater Rock Island Lion's Club, where he worked countless evenings of bingo at the club.

Those left to honor his memory are several cousins, including Mary Runge, Appleton, WI; special friend, Mary "Deannie" Wiggins, Rock Island and Deannie's family who he had "adopted" as his own and the many friends he had made in the course of a life spent in the service to others.
