ANDERSON, WALTER LASSITER
age 90, a long time resident of Hoover, Alabama, passed away on June 27, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Aline Chesnutt Anderson; children, Walter L. Anderson, Jr. (Betty), Sherrie Tarpley (Phillip), and Scott Anderson (Katy); grandchildren, Jean Aline Anderson, Carlton Aline Tarpley, Hallie Tarpley, Mitchell Anderson, and Nicholas Anderson; nephew Rod Anderson; cousin Jimmy Whatley; and numerous relatives in Walton County, FL and Camden, AL. Predeceasing him were his brother Dr. William R. Anderson of Camden, AL and parents William Bloxham Anderson and Annie Lou Whatley Anderson of DeFuniak Springs, FL. Mr. Anderson was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church Friendship Class. He was an avid fisherman and golfer, a long time member of Hoover Country Club, and past Master of Shades Valley Masonic Lodge #829, where he received recognition as a 65 year Mason and as its oldest member.
He served as a Chief Petty officer in the Navy during World War II teaching classes in metal work in Florida and Oklahoma, where the main focus was repairing airplanes damaged in combat.
Mr. Anderson was born in Gainesville, FL and grew up in DeFuniak Springs, FL, graduating from Walton County High School where he was captain of his football team. He attended UAB and Birmingham-Southern College. He worked as a manufacturer's representative for Hickory Chair Company for twenty-three years. For many years, he was general manager of the Birmingham Holiday Inns and before that; he owned the clothing store Durham Woolen Mills.
Honorary Pallbearers are members of Shades Valley Masonic Lodge. Special appreciation is expressed to Dr. Richard Cox, Dr. Edward Alderson and Dr. Jeffrey Glaze for their long time care, to St. Vincent's Home Health Care staff, and to longtime Navy buddy Joe Honeycutt, Masonic friends Bob Cargo and Reggie Baker and golfing buddy Jim Perry. Deep appreciation is expressed for the kindness and nursing care of Agnes Reese who made his illness more bearable.
A Masonic Funeral Service will be conducted by Dennis Borden of Shades Valley Masonic Lodge #829 at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at Ridout's Valley Chapel, 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, Alabama. Visitation with the family will be one hour preceding the service at 1:00 P.M. Following the ceremony, interment will be immediate family only at Elmwood's Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church or Boy Scout Troop 97, both at 1400 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL 35209 or to the Anderson-Broxson Cemetery Fund, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Trustee Roddy Harrison, 2360 Haughton Lane, Ponce de Leon, FL 32455. His son Walter Jr. and his two grandsons Mitchell and Nicholas Anderson received their Eagle Ranks while members of BSA Troop 97 so this Scout troop was especially important to Walter.
