Walter Herrington Gorton
Born: August 8, 1922 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - Died: July 8, 2014 Downey, California
Walter grew up in Pennsylvania one of three brothers, Charles, Walter and Ken. He enlisted in the Marine Corp on July 2, 1942 and made Sargeant during his enlistment. He was a sharpshooter and his military occupation was "aircraft mechanic". He served in the Pacific Theater and was in the Marshall Islands. He was discharged from the Marines July 2, 1945.
He met his wife Jean Newell in Los Angeles through his Uncle Len who worked with her at the Defense Dept. After a nine month courtship they married October 25, 1946 and moved to Pittsburgh to start their life, living with his mother in the attic of her three story home. After some cold winters and hot summers they decided to move west to look for work. They moved to Los Angeles and moved into the garage of Jean's mother, Nora. Walter said they liked the privacy of the garage and it was easy to clean. Just open the garage door and sweep it out!
He began his work at Lever Brothers and they were able to buy a home in Bellflower. They had three daughters, Kimberly, Nora and Dixie. He continued his work at Lever Brothers and was promoted into management. He worked there until his retirement at 58. He immediately took up golf and became an avid golfer playing a couple of times a week. He loved it when Kimberly retired because he played golf with her and her husband Hank, for many years.
His wife, Jean, passed away in December of 1998. He remained in this home in Bellflower, where no one was a stranger. His family and extended family and friends kept him company. Fortunately, he re connected with close friend and former neighbor Clara Finn. They spent a lot of time together and fell in love marrying July 23, 2001. This marriage brought four wonderful sons into his life and he loved them like his own. Clara and Walt had a love filled 13 years of marriage, traveling, enjoying their church activities, dancing and laughing together.
Walter was loved by all who knew him. He was an extraordinary man.
