William D. Gomes, age 98, passed away Friday, November 23, 2012 at Tremont Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center in Wareham after a year of declining health. He was the loving husband of Gertrude L. (Chambers) Gomes to whom he had been married for 63 years.
Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Augusto and Maria de Gloria (Dias) Gomes, he lived in Fairhaven most of his adult life.
He worked as a NYC dockworker, a General Motors Operator, and later retired from the Fairhaven Post Office as the head custodian in 1977. Bill served in the United States Army during World War II. He served as the Past Commander and Adjutant of the DAV-Chapter 7 New Bedford, was a member of the American Legion, and a member of the National Order of Trench Rats, serving at one point as The Golden Rodent. Bill and his wife were also longtime members of the Wilbur's Point Association.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, are his loving daughter, Sherry L. Gomes of Plymouth; his son William C. Gomes of Hollywood, FL; his devoted nephew Daniel Gomes and his wife Claudia of Fairhaven; his brother-in-law Gerald Chambers of Boston, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Joseph Gomes, Mary Ventura, Anthony Gomes, Maria Rose Rosa and Hilda Gomes.
His Funeral will be held Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at 11:30 am at the Waring-Sullivan Homes of Memorial Tribute at Fairlawn Mortuary, 180 Washington Street, Fairhaven, MA. Visitation prior from 10-11:30 am. Burial in Riverside Cemetery.
