Obituary

Agnes Sobatzke Wiedl, 101, died Friday, October 19, 2012. Born in Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter of Casimir and Kathryn Sobatzke. She was a graduate of Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Indiana where she earned B.F.A. and M.A. degrees. After graduation she worked at the University of Notre Dame where she met her husband, Michael F. Wiedl Jr. They moved to Atlanta in 1937. She came to love Atlanta, considering herself an adopted daughter of the South, and took great pride in watching the city grow and prosper. Agnes Sobatzke Wiedl, 101, died Friday, October 19, 2012. Born in Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter of Casimir and Kathryn Sobatzke. She was a graduate of Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Indiana where she earned B.F.A. and M.A. degrees. After graduation she worked at the University of Notre Dame where she met her husband, Michael F. Wiedl Jr. They moved to Atlanta in 1937. She came to love Atlanta, considering herself an adopted daughter of the South, and took great pride in watching the city grow and prosper. She worked for Adair Realty for many years and later for Merrill Lynch Realty. She was a longtime member of the Cathedral of Christ the King. She was an active member of the Saint Mary’s College Atlanta Alumnae Club, receiving the club’s “Founder’s Day Award”.



She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Raymond J. Sobatzke and her husband of thirty-three years. She is survived by twin sisters, Rita R. Washburn of Coal City, IL and Rineva S. Sommer of Bradly, IL. She also is survived by her children, Michael F. Wiedl III and his wife, Ann Doody Wiedl of St. Louis, MO, Kathryn W. Mettler M.D. and her husband Stephen C. Mettler PhD of Atlanta, Rosemary T. King and her husband Congressman Peter T. King of Seaford, NY, and Stephen C. Wiedl and his wife, Barbara Hymel Wiedl of Smyrna; grandchildren, Stephen P. Mettler and his wife Stacy Montford Mettler of New Canaan, CT, Elizabeth Mettler and her husband Sean W. Flaherty of Washington DC, Donald M. Mettler and his wife Barbara Mooney Mettler of Peachtree Corners, Sean King of New York, NY, Erin King Sweeney and her husband John Sweeney Of Seaford, NY and Stephen C. Wiedl Jr. of  Smyrna  and 15 great grandchildren. She was affectionately called “Mother Goose” by her children, and upon arrival of the grandchildren, became, “Granny Goose”.



The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 until 8 o’clock at Patterson’s Oglethorpe Hill Chapel. A Funeral mass will be held Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at 10:00 am at the Cathedral of Christ the King. The Reverend Frank McNamee will officiate. Burial will follow the funeral mass at Arlington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions in honor of Agnes Sobatzke Wiedl may be made to: Alumnae Memorial Scholarship, Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Indiana 46556.
