Albert John "Jack" Wilwerding was born on October 30, 1925, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His father, Albert Michael Wilwerding, was a financial advisor, construction manager, and bookkeeper. His mother, Marie Henrietta (O'Rourke) Wilwerding , worked at home caring for Jack and his sister Patricia Jean Wilwerding.

Jack graduated from Thomas Edison Senior High School in Minneapolis in 1943, enlisted in the United States Air Force, and began pilot training for service in World War II. He was demobilized in 1945, when the war ended, and discharged honorably in 1946 with the rank of First Lieutenant.

Jack's decision to enlist in the Air Force arose chiefly from a desire to serve his country, but was motivated as well by his love for the idea of flight. He was born twelve years after the Wright brothers first powered flight in 1903, and built and flew model airplanes all his life. He trained to be a pilot as a young man and again in middle age. Although he made solo flights in the Air Force and afterward, he never became a fully trained, licensed pilot, which was, perhaps, the greatest disappointment of his life.

Jack received a Bachelor's degree in Architecture from the University of Minnesota in 1950, where he was attracted to modernist design. He was the first of his extended family to earn a college degree. After graduating Jack began work for the firm of Setter, Leach and Lindstrom (S, L, & L), where he remained until 1988. He became President of the firm in 1968, and Chair of its Board in 1970. Under his leadership, S, L, & L doubled in size and was involved in the design and construction of several prominent Minneapolis buildings, including the St. Louis Park Medical Center; Health Sciences Buildings A, B and C at the University of Minnesota; the Huber H. Humphrey Metrodome; and the Minneapolis Convention Center.

On August 13, 1949, Jack Wilwerding married Melba Janis (Brock) Wilwerding. Janis, too, graduated from Edison High School and the University of Minnesota, where she studied Education. At the time of their marriage she taught elementary school. The couple had three sons, Jeffrey John, Jonathan Michael, and Justin Brock Wilwerding, and four grandchildren, Suzanne Marie and Adam Jeffrey Wilwerding, Ashley Anne Zborowsky, and Kian Paul Wilwerding. At various times, Jack and Janis' household also included Boston Terriers, Jasper, Jessica, and Feather, cats, Ralph, Biru, Cort, Hsiao, and Timmy, and a squirrel (Jimmy). By family consensus, Jessica was the best dog. Ever.

Jack Wilwerding died on Tuesday, October 9th, 2012 at approximately 3:30 in the afternoon. He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. His wife and children will miss his sense of humor and his frequently outrageous behavior at Christmas dinner (his favorite event of the year) and other times. They will also miss his fierce determination to protect and provide for them, his loyalty, and his steadfast presence in their lives. Jack Wilwerding died with his children near and his wife singing lullabies to him.

Memorial service 3:00 PM Saturday, October 20, 2012 at Sunset Funeral Home, 2250 St. Anthony Blvd. NE, Mpls., with visitation one hour before. (612) 789-3596. www.SunsetFuneralServices.com
