Anniston - Funeral services for Mr. Albert Henry "Johnny" Clifton, 74 of Anniston will be Sunday, March 17, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church at Saks with Rev. Sandy Felkins and Rev. Jimmy Tompkins officiating with burial following at Forestlawn cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday, March 16, 2013 from 5-7 p.m. at the Chapel Hill Funeral Home and will lie in state one hour before service at the church. Mr. Clifton passed away March 14, 2013 at his home in Anniston.
Mr. Clifton is survived by his wife, Judith Truitt Clifton; daughter, Melea Clifton Tompkins and husband Jimmy, and Carolyn Till Clifton; son, R. Brian Clifton and wife Diane; sisters, Shirley Sewell and Sally Spurling; brother, Charles "Butch" Clifton; grandchildren, Katie Clifton Edwards, Whitney Clifton, Nathaniel Brian Tompkins, and Aria Joy Tompkins; great-grandchildren, Hannah Kathryn Edwards, Walker Jamison Edwards, and Barrett Thomas Edwards.
Pallbearers will be Nate Tompkins, Jamison Edwards, Shayne Johnson, Tim Williams, Brad Nichols, Charles Clifton, Kenneth Spurling and Mark Spurling. Honorary pallbearers will be retired Alabama State Troopers and United Methodist Men of the McClellan Cluster.
Mr. Clifton was the 1st recipient of the Alabama State Trooper of the Year award in 1967, and was also one of the first recipients of the Alabama State Troopers Meritorious Service Award. At the time he joined the Alabama Department of Safety in 1958 he was the youngest trooper to be hired, having graduated from the Cadet program. Mr. Clifton was a member of the Disaster Control Group (DCG), a precursor to the modern day SWAT/Tactical teams. He was a graduate of Alexandria High School class of 1956.
Mr. Clifton was a native and lifelong of Calhoun County and was a member of First United Methodist Church at Saks.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the or First United Methodist Church at Saks.
