Albert Eugene Cooke, Jr.

WEST COLUMBIA – Funeral service for Albert Eugene Cooke, Jr., 89, will be held at noon on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at Congaree Presbyterian Church with burial to follow at 2:00 p.m. in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The Rev. John White will officiate.
Mr. Cooke passed away in his sleep Sunday, March 17, 2013. Born in Lake City, SC on Dec. 11, 1923, he was the son of the late Albert E. Cooke, Sr. and Clara Kirby Cooke. He was predeceased by two sisters and three brothers; the last of his immediate family. He served in the U.S. Navy on a destroyer in the North Atlantic in WWII. After his service in the war, he returned to graduate from Columbia High School in 1949. After his college years he had many occupations including International Paper Company and was first mate on a tugboat in Georgetown County. He later moved to Columbia and worked at a building supply company for several years, which included driving an 18-wheeler long-distance. He was a devout member of Congaree Presbyterian Church.
He was the beloved husband of Helen Cooke, to whom he was married for sixty-five years. Surviving are his wife; daughter, Deborah Hickman; grandson, Barrett Hickman and granddaughter, Stephanie Hickman. Mr. Cooke was a strong man who always took the best care of his family. He will be deeply missed.
The family of Albert Cooke would like to express their heartfelt appreciation for the care and help received by members of Congaree Presbyterian Church and All Saints Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Congaree Presbyterian Church in gratitude for the support and help in times of great need: 1221 Lafayette Ave., Cayce, SC 29033.
