Albert Frankel, M.D., beloved husband of Ruth French Frankel for 56 years, died peacefully at his home in Montclair, NJ on June 25th at the age of 84. Born on November 7, 1931 in Syracuse, NY, he was the oldest of three children born to Leah and Saul Frankel. He attended Nottingham High School and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Syracuse University prior to receiving his medical degree from the State University of New York, College of Medicine in 1956. He embarked on his nearly 46-year career in General Surgery and Gastroenterology at Mount Sinai Hospital as an attending surgeon and Associate Professor of Clinical Surgery enhancing the name and reputation of the surgical department during his time. He was called for Armed Forces active duty in July 1961-July 1963 and served proudly as a Captain, Medical Corps, U.S. Army at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD during the threat of the Cuban Missile Crisis. He returned to Mount Sinai and continued his surgical career publishing numerous papers and lecturing often to the American College of Gastroenterology on various surgical diagnoses and treatments for colorectal disorders. In 1979, he was named Chief of Surgery, Senior Attending Surgeon at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center, allowing him to follow his passion as an educator through their medical residency program affiliated with the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. As a respected clinician and mentor, he contributed to the education of countless surgical residents and fellows creating a legacy of patient care that will continue for decades. Devoted to his family, he was a man of generous heart and spirit and shared a tremendous sense of humor, wit and infectious warmth to those around him. His intellectual integrity was uncompromising, and he loved to share his great wisdom and righteous sensibilities with his students, colleagues, family and friends. His academic interests were vast and his love of the arts, fine food and travel helped form the mosaic of his life. Upon retirement, he found an innate gift for painting and enjoyed years of perfecting his craft at the Montclair Art Museum even showing his work in several art shows. Yet, it was his love of family that was paramount in his life. A love affair spanning more than a half century with Ruth - inseparable in heart and soul. He was a sage for his children and was friend and loving mentor to each of his beloved grandchildren. He is survived by countless friends and family: wife, Ruth; his two daughters, Karen Strauss and Dr. Renee Frankel; his son, Paul Frankel and his wife, Amy Hanna; grandchildren, Rebecca, Liza, Hannah, Juliet; sisters, Rosalie Wallach and Susan Herman. Donations in his memory may be made to Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (ccfa.org) or Temple Sholom of West Essex (sholom.net)
