Obituary

Dr. Alex James Cade of East Lansing, died on August 7, 2013 after a long illness. Dr. Cade was born in Louise, Mississippi to William and Mattie Cade, one of 8 children. He received an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial State University in 1953, a Masters in Psychology from Indiana University, and his Ph.D. in education in 1963 from Michigan State University. He became a faculty member in the department of Psychology at Michigan State University in 1963, becoming a full professor within 8 years. Dr. Alex James Cade of East Lansing, died on August 7, 2013 after a long illness. Dr. Cade was born in Louise, Mississippi to William and Mattie Cade, one of 8 children. He received an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial State University in 1953, a Masters in Psychology from Indiana University, and his Ph.D. in education in 1963 from Michigan State University. He became a faculty member in the department of Psychology at Michigan State University in 1963, becoming a full professor within 8 years. He was instrumental in starting the Upward Bound program at Michigan State University, a program which introduced disadvantaged youth to the college experience and encouraged them to explore their academic and career possibilities. He was a co-founder and teacher at the Justin Morrill College at the University, the precursor of the Residential College of Arts and Humanities. He retired from Michigan State in 1985. In addition, Dr. Cade was in private practice, providing mental health services for over 40 years. His teaching experiences ranged from teaching 8th grade students in Mississippi in the 50's to teaching undergraduate and graduate students at MSU for over 20 years. He was active in his church on both local and national levels.
Dr. Cade is survived by his wife of 62 years, Juanita; his brothers Laverne (known as Limmie) and Frank; his sisters Lillie and Ruby; his children Bonita (Charles White) and Icy (Marvin Bell) and Mark; nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 14, 2013, 11:00 a.m. at First Christian Church, 1001 Chester Rd., Lansing, MI with the Rev. Dr. Rick Boyd officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 13, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 East Grand River Avenue, East Lansing and 1 hour prior to the service at church.
