He attended New Dorp High School and enlisted into the U.S. Air Force where he served four years, both in the US and in Guam, being Honorably Discharged in 1962. He proudly served the NYPD as Detective for 23 years, during which he earned a degree in Criminal Justice from John Jay College. In 1986, following his retirement from the NYPD, he served for more than twenty years as an intake counselor and project manager for the Staten Island office of Treatment Alternatives for Street Crimes. Alfred was an avid sports fan and spent many an afternoon cheering on the Sparta High school teams as well as being an avid New York Yankee fan. As a young man he played on local Staten Island softball and basketball teams.

He came to love Sparta and was more than willing to share his "war stories" from his years on the NYPD to anyone who wanted to listen. He was frequently seen driving the country roads of Sussex County to enjoy the scenery and unfettered travel.
